Neon Ballroom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neon Ballroom is the third album from the Australian musical group Silverchair.
Johns described Neon Ballroom as a concept album, although exactly what the concept was was not made entirely clear.
The musical direction Neon Ballroom was perceived as taking would later continue in their 2002 album Diorama, as well as some of Daniel John's experimental collaborations with fellow Australian artist Paul Mac (Johns and Mac would later form The Dissociatives).

The fact of the matter is, “Neon Ballroom,” the band’s third full length, is a pretty solid rock album.
This is the first album in which the band really experiments with orchestral arrangements on more than a few tracks.
Rather than using simply power chord arrangements, Johns has improved both guitar and vocal abilities to create something much darker than previous efforts, which were intentionally trying to create a hollow and dirty feel.

The Australian trio never made any secret of their respect for Nirvana, and on Neon Ballroom Silverchair does one of the best impersonations of their Seattle counterparts on record.
When the weepy ballads, like the Goo Goo Dolls-esque "Miss You Love," pull Neon Ballroom into an overtly radio-friendly direction, all the promise of a gritty grunge tribute fades, and Silverchair appears to be serving two masters.
The resultingly incongruent musical textures stifled Neon Ballroom and assured a certain amount of fan disenchantment despite the minor airplay success of "Ana's Song (Open Fire)." There are still enough nice moments on this CD to recommend it to even casual fans of the Aussie outfit.

When the youthful Silverchair first appeared in the landscape-changing wake of NEVERMIND, they were solidly in the Cobain-inspired grunge mold, coming off as young disciples worshipping at the Nirvana altar with little of their own to bring to the Seattle Sound party.
In '99, with Cobain long gone and grunge a distant memory, NEON BALLROOM appeared to be a bridge between Silverchair's copycat beginnings and a more adventurous future.
While the heavy riffs, raspy vocals and Cobainish melodies of yesteryear are still in evidence here, the sound is greatly expanded.

On Neon Ballroom they inch toward that goal by adding a little piano (courtesy of the famously eccentric David Helfgott) and replacing some of their angst-ridden rock with lushly orchestrated tunes.
Unfortunately, tunes like "Anthem for the Year 2000" are far too common, generically reprocessing ideas that have been done better before.
Neon Ballroom does show potential, though, which should lead to better albums down the road.

"The words 'neon ballroom' represented the vision that I had for the album, which was the more futuristic sounds and the more traditional orchestral sounds...." He's clearer on the process that led to the Helfgott connection.

Those who had enough of Silverchair when modern rock radio played their mid-'90s hits to death need not concern themselves with this mixed effort.
