Genesis (Hebrew: בראשית, Greek: Γένεσις, having the meanings of "birth", "creation", "cause", "beginning", "source" and "origin") is the first book of the Torah, the first book of the Tanakh and also the first book of the Christian Old Testament.
Genesis begins by describing God's creation of the world, Adam and Eve and their banishment from the Garden of Eden, the story of Cain and Abel, and the story of Noah and the great flood.
Some historians believe Genesis to be a more recent example of monotheistic belief than Zoroastrianism, interpreting the commandment "have no other gods before me" as an artifact of early henotheism among the Jews -- i.e., as evidence that the Hebrews were not to worship the gods of other peoples, but only their own tribal god.

At this point, a review of Neon Genesis Evangelion is basically an academic exercise--the series has been talked to Death and back (pun intended) and it has reached the point where it's almost too popular not to watch for the few who haven't seen it already.
In all, Neon Genesis Evangelion itself is something of a parallel with the NERV of its own story--an experiment on a grand scale, full of mystery and disturbing, dark corners, and staffed by people with serious mental issues.
Evangelion is not based on a manga series, but there are two manga adaptations.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although it is not revealed until late in the series' run, Evangelion's story began in 2000, when an expedition of scientists in Antarctica discovered a large being of light, which they called Adam, or the first "Angel" (also referred to as "the first human" by Gendo in episode 8).
On September 13, they experimented on Adam; however, this caused Adam to go haywire and self-destruct (but in the process, it was also reduced to an egg cell), resulting in a cataclysm that would later be called the "Second Impact".
Invader Zim also had an homage to Evangelion's 1st episode in the episode "Hamstergeddon", where Ultra PeePee runs down a hill in very much the same way (and angle) as Unit 01 did.

The final installments of the 26-episode Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series left a lot to be desired.
The entire piece is more an experimental tone poem than a narrative film, but the tone is somewhat shrill and nerve-wracking, and in the end, the text segments are more useful than anything in the film itself.
Unlike The End of Evangelion, Death and Rebirth has relatively little to add to the Evangelion story, and its contributions are mostly distractions, variations and teasers for the upcoming main event.
