Topic: Neophema

In the News (Sat 11 Oct 08)

  Visual Wings - Grass Parakeets
Neophema parakeets are popular aviary birds because of their beauty and peaceful temperament.
Neophemas, however, have quiet, introverted personalities; they are not as outgoing or charismatic as budgies.
Neophemas, especially those kept in outdoor aviaries in warmer climates, are susceptible to Candida infections.

 about
Neophemas are one of the most popular groups of parrots available to Aviculturists, not only in Australia but all over the globe.
Green Neophemas should definitely not be housed together due to the risk of hybridising.
Although I have seen Neophemas housed in smaller suspendeds, I find that this size enables plenty of exercise, too long causes younger ones to crash into the end, often with fatal results.

The upper surface is olive green, the underparts yellow, the wings are blue with fl flight feathers, the nose-band is blue.
The Blue-wing is the hardest of all the Neophemas to sex.

The Pezoporus-Geopsittacus clade was supported in all of the bootstrap replicates, while nodes linking Neophema and Melopsitta- cus to this clade were well supported with boot- strap values of 91 and 71%, respectively.
In concert with the shared patterns of distri- bution, Geopsittacus and Pezoporus were consis- tently allied with Neophema by the cytochrome-b data.
Neophema, Melopsittacus, and Geopsittacus share a Type A-1 carotid formula (no data are avail- able for Pezoporus), whereas the other platycer- cines (including Cyanoramphus) are Type A-2 (Garrod 1873, 1874, 1876, Glenny 1957).

The Bourke is neither member of the Neophema group (Spendid, Turquosine, Elegant etc.) nor to the Psephotus group (Hooded, Red vented Blue Bonnet, etc).
It is known that birds who have a camouflage colour and -structure are always alighted on soil matching their plumage in colour and pattern.
Colour of the plumage: Neophema are green birds, green in several varieties, olive green in the blue wing parrot, golden olive in the elegant, brownish olive in the rock parrot, bright grass green in the orange bellied parrot, bright green in the splendid and the turquoisine.

 Turquoise Parrot or Neophema pulchella
The Neophema parrot is easy to house and will accept and breed in a cage of about 1200mm long, 600mm high and 600mm wide (4 x 2 x 2 feet through to a standard parrot aviary.
Birds housed in a cage or suspended cage during the breeding season should be allowed access to an aviary during the non-breeding season for adequate exercise and to regain a good level of fitness.
The Neophemas may breed before the age of 12 months, but it is preferable to let the birds fully mature prior to commencing breeding.

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Neophema splendida
Neophema splendida occurs in the mallee or mulga woodland of southern semi-arid inland Australia.
Altered fire regimes may have a detrimental effect elsewhere but there is no evidence of decline in the last 20 years.
Although provision of permanent water in semi-arid rangelands is said to have favoured Bourke's Parrot Neopsephotus bourkii over Neophema splendida, the two co-occur over most of the range of N. splendida (Garnett and Crowley 2000).

COMMUNICATION: Saving Rare Parrots in Captivity
Birds which, by reason of their quarrelsome disposition, I should never keep except in pairs, have been turned into an aviary with a number of their own kind and various other parra- keets and yet have reared numerous young.
The first four Neophemae are easily confused by anyone not familiar with the genus, and to avoid the production of crossbred birds of no scientific interest the following distinctions should be borne in mind.
The Orange-bellied is the greenest of the four; it has, as its name implies, a patch of orange on the belly, but this fea- ture is frequently met with in brightly colored.

 Merga's Mates [ Bourkes Parrots ]
It was disputed over the years as to whether or not the Bourke's Parrot (formerly Neophema Bourkii) is a true Neophema hence the reclassification.
It is the only member of this group that does not among other differences carry the basic green colour common to all members of the neophema family, also they will not hybridize as will the others.
The housing, feeding and care of these birds is the same as for other members of the family.

The original Latin name of the Bourke's parrot is Neophema bourkii (neo - new + pheme - voice, bourkii - after Sir Richard Bourke, the governor of New South Wales) however in recent years there has been a trend towards placing the Bourke's into a separate genus.
Unlike the other members of the Neophema genus, which include Neophema splendida (Scarlet-chested parakeet), Neophema elegans (Elegant Parakeet), Neophema pulehelle (Turquosine parakeet), Neophema chrysostoma (Bluewing parakeet), and Neophema petrophila (Rock Parrot), the Bourke's lack any green coloration in their feathers.
While today the Bourke's are considered to be the most common parrot found among the thorn acacias in the savannas of southwestern Australia, this wasn't always the case.
