 Epirot Islands
According to legend, Neoptolemos or Pyrros the late hero of Trojan war, sailed to the Epirote Islands and then became the king of Epirus exiling Odysseus after he killed a large number of suitors that pestered his wife, Penelope.
Neoptolemos was son of Achilles by princess Deidamea daughter of Lycomedes, the King of Scyros.
Neoptolemos did so, but in contrast to Achilles, who had previously shown mercy to Priam, her father and King of Troy, he also sacrificed him to Zeus.

Neoptolemos is caught between these two extremes, drawn to each by the conflicting forces of admiration for Philoctetes and duty towards Odysseus.
Although the coverage of the play's themes is necessarily curtailed by the scope of the series, a number of key themes that warrant inclusion are missing from the introduction and notes.
There is no mention of the significance to the plot of movements towards and away from the shore, nor treatment of the sequence of aborted exits at lines 461, 533, 1179 and 1402 in the Greek text.

This particular set would mean that Philoctetes could enter the cave, after Neoptolemos has declared it empty, from the rear entrance and that Odysseus' 'surprise', that is unannounced, mid-line entrances of 974 and 1293 could be made from the cave itself.
Odysseus' familiarity with the geography of the promontory was revealed during the opening scene of the play and Odysseus repeatedly expressed concern about being overheard from the cave at 11, 14, 22 and 29; in addition Philoctetes enters from the cave in response to noises that he hears in the orchestra at 1263-4.
Neoptolemos had expressed the desire that Philoctetes should trust in the gods and in his logoi (1374-5), that his presence at Troy is necessary and that healing and fame await him there.

But not all would agree here, and Sophokles has so constructed his play that when it seems that Philoktetes and Neoptolemos will leave for Greece, abandoning the Greeks to a fruitless siege of Troy, this is somehow morally and ethically the 'right' outcome (1361-1408).
She assumes that most of the tale that the boy relates to Philoktetes at 343-90 is a fiction and thus views Neoptolemos as a "talented pupil" of the crafty Odysseus.
There is no reason to regard the description of Neoptolemos' arrival at 354-60 as a fiction.

Hawthorne: The Act of Interpretation in Sophokles’ Philoktetes
Before Philoktetes comes on stage, Neoptolemos takes the oracle as predictive, in order to distance himself emotionally from the man whom he intends to deceive (191-200).
After the bow is stolen, the Chorus takes this earlier cue from Neoptolemos and reads Philoktetes’ situation as so bound up in fate that they can claim a complete freedom from responsibility for the deception plot in which they have just participated (1116-21).
Later, deliberating about whether to run off with the bow, Neoptolemos invokes a prescriptive interpretation in strikingly “oracular” hexameters to justify his hesitation (839-42).

Odysseus is in the land of the dead when he talks to Achilles, who is dead (of course.) Achilles asks Odysseus about his father, Peleus, and his son, Neoptolemos, and states that he would rather be alive and be a poor farmer than to be an important person in the underworld.
Neoptolemos spoke in all the of the councils at Troy and no one could beat him in debates, with the exception of Odysseus and Nestor, he continues on to say that during battle Neoptolemos fought gallantly, and was always brave.
During the battle all the men were afraid and cried, but Neoptolemos was never scared or cowardly.

The Perdicca’s side showed soon its vulnerability: Alketa didn’t take any action, Neoptolemos switched side along with some hundreds survivors since Eumenes, with his rather multilingual but highly efficient cavalry, crushed his army; much more decisive was the Cleitus’ change of party.
Eumenes feared that is army, particularly the infantry, consisting of a fair amount of Macedonians, could desert to the enemy, subjugated by Craterus’ charisma: in order to avoid it, Eumenes kept secret to his army the identity of the enemy General saying that the action was a Neoptolemos’s redemption attempt.
Plutarc wrote that Eumenes, ragged and bleeding, rode till the body of his old friend Craterus, and fell on his knee crying and cursing the destiny (and Neoptolemos) that had forced the two of them to fight to death.
