Neoterics by Theodore Sturgeon from Microcosmic God   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In the story, Kidder puts the Neoterics into life-and-death situations to force them to invent what he needed.
The Neoterics were imprisoned in a shatterproof, chemical-proof sealed bubble.
When Kidder needed to develop stronger alloys, he arranged for them to have only lighter metals and then started dropping the ceiling on their containment bin one millimeter per day.

Yet while his argument for the existence of the neoterics and for identifying the group’s component poets seems as strong as the scanty surviving evidence allows, his discussion of what it meant to be a neoteric poet is lacking.
When writing to neoteric Gaius Helvius Cinna of a promiscuous woman named Maecilia in poem 113, for example, he begins, “Consule Pompeio primum” (113.1),[3] which is a typical introduction for a history, a genre seemingly far removed from poetry.
That he feels free to address the issues with his fellow neoterics suggests that, at the very least, it was a comfortable topic for the group to read and discuss and possibly an inspiration for other neoteric poetry.

In contrast to the example of their neoteric predecessors, the poets of the triumviral period did not commonly produce epigrams as stand-alone compositions.
In ways to be explored in this paper, in both cases mimetic speech serves to highlight incorporation and the event of allusion because of the quasi-generic signature of epigram as poetry that is by definition written.
The internal development within Latin poetry from the stand-alone epigrams of the neoterics to the incorporation of adapted epigrams within the context of longer poems thus in a way mirrors the common hermeneutic response to reading the original Hellenistic models.

Neoteric - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Neoteric can be easily thought of as "The New Poets," for it was this group of thinkers, including the famed Catullus, who as a result of the luxurious lifestyle of Roman aristocracy in the first century B.C.E, began to reject traditional norms both socially and in their writing.
His collection of 116 poems, written in the Neoteric style is said to have been uncovered in Verona in 1300.
His poetry exemplifies the elegant vocabulary, meter, and sound, which the Neoterics sought, while balancing it with the equally important allusive element of their style.

To the Neoterics, however, he is a cruel and capricious God.
The human race is left to wait nervously for the day when the Neoterics lower their shield and emerge.
Sturgeon's Neoterics were small (sub-millimeter in size?), but not nanometer-scale molecular machines, and Kidder's control of them was more at the level of coercion than of programming; further, they are evolved rather than designed.

Bryn Mawr College Graduate Student Symposium: All for One or One for All? (Re)constructing Identity in the Ancient World
This kind of unusual retelling was very popular with Neoterics, who followed in the footsteps of Callimachus' Hecale, in which he told the story of Theseus and the Bull of Marathon mostly through a chance meeting on a journey.
There is another way we should associate Nepos with the Neoterics - while he is often treated by scholars as a stodgy old man, we know that he wrote light verse with his friends.
This judgment is similar to Neoterics' rejection of the traditional epic.

Clearly the work of a poet-critic attempting to embrace a larger portion of human experience than the personal postmodern self, The Grove of the Eumenides reaches toward an epic vision of the twenty-first century, invoking a global vision beyond the prevailing conceptions of life and literature that have become firmly entrenched in contemporary culture.
Into the Ruins confronts much of the human experience left out of the balance by postmodern poetry, often compared to the Alexandrians and the Neoterics, when writers similarly concentrated on the minor themes of personal life, while ignoring the challenging experience of the public realm.
Suffused with a global tragic vision, Into the Ruins has its gaze fixed firmly on the 21st Century.

Kidder needs the Neoterics for their scientific information, while he fulfills for the Neoterics all the roles that a deity does for a particular culture.
No doubt, after many thousands of Neoteric generations, at least a few heretics who defy the teleprompter will rise up and take control, possibly while Kidder is taking a little snooze (I simply cannot believe the text when it claims Kidder no longer sleeps; He's got to sleep, even if only in short dozes.
The Neoterics are infinitely more powerful than their God, yet still they cower at his every command.

 Gaius Valerius Catullus
In his lifetime, Catullus was a poet's poet, addressing himself to fellow craftsmen (docti, or scholarly poets), especially to his friend Licinius Calvus.
He belonged to a group of poets called the poetae novi or "Neoterics" (new poets), who preferred the works of the Alexandrian poets to the grander but archaic fashion of Roman poetry.
To the degree that Catullus shared such conceptions of what might be called poetic scholarship, he is to be numbered in the company of Gerard Manley Hopkins, T.S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound rather than with the Romantics.

Through an obsession with detail, the Alexandrians achieved a high poetic density and complexity in their work.
These same features come into Roman literature in the verse composition of Ennius and especially the Neoterics.
One contribution of Virgilian poetics is the use of this detailed technique not only for the jewel-like construction of individual lines but also for structural unity of the larger work.

Catullus began writing at an early age, influenced by the work of the neoterics, a group of poets then beginning to get attention in Rome.
