Nepenthes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The genus Nepenthes (Tropical Pitcher Plants or Monkey Cups) in the monotypic family Nepenthaceae contains roughly 80-100 species, (depending on author), several natural and many cultivated hybrids.
They are carnivorous or insectivorous plants of the old world tropics, ranging from South China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines; westward to Madagascar (2 species) and the Seychelles (1); southward to Australia (1) and New Caledonia (1); and northward to India (1) and Sri Lanka (1).

Heubl: Cytology of Nepenthes (Botanical Biodiversity Research LMU)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Nepenthaceae are remarkably uniform in chromosome number with 2n=80.
It is evident that in Droseraceae all ploidy levels are present, whereas in Nepenthes diploid and lower polyploids have already gone extinct and the radiation was restricted to a high ploidy level.
In view of the molecular data (rbcL), palynological (tetrads), chemical (naphthochinons) and morphological features (fruit, seeds, embryo, ovules) and also from the cytological point of view a systematic position of the Nepenthaceae not to far away from the Droseraceae is confirmed.

Pitcher plant - Wikpedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Pitcher plants (families Sarraceniaceae and Nepenthaceae) are carnivorous plants featuring a deep cavity filled with liquid.
Nepenthaceae have separate male and female flowers while Sarraceniaceae are hermaphrodites.
While Nepenthaceae and Sarraceniaceae are the best-known and most speciose groups of pitcher plants, two more obscure pitcher plant families exist:

Like all carnivorous plants, they occur in locations where the soil is too poor in minerals and/or too acidic for most plants to be able to grow.
The families of Nepenthaceae and Sarraceniaceae are the best-known and most speciose groups of pitcher plants.
In these Old World pitcher plants, the pitchers are borne at the end of tendrils that extend from the midrib of an otherwise unexceptional leaf.

Nepenthales: Droseraceae & Nepenthaceae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Nepenthales includes the Nepenthaceae (Asian pitcher plants) and the Droseraceae (flytraps & sundews).
In the photosynthetic autotrophic kingdom of plants, there are few among the green, leafy and inanimate that have evolved a certain taste for other organisms.
There are about 70 to 75 species of Nepenthes, the only genus in the Nepenthaceae, and they occur around the Indian Ocean from Madagascar to southeast Asia, New Guinea, and northern Australia.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
As for the Nepenthaceae, Lindley assigned these to the order Nepenthales and placed them next to the Aristolochiales in an artificial group that he soon abandoned.
Certainly, it may be said with some confidence, that the association of the Nepenthaceae with the Aristolochiales, as suggested by Hutchinson, should be abandoned.
According to these data, Nepenthaceae are the sister group to the combination of Polygonaceae and Plumbaginaceae, and these in turn are the sister group to the Droseraceae.

 Caryophyllales
Rhabdodendraceae are evergreen trees that may be recognised by their fringed-peltate hairs, their rather large, entire and exstipulate leaves, flowers with stamens that have short filaments and long anthers, and a single carpel with a basal style.
Nepenthaceae are insectivorous plants that are easy to recognise because of the lidded pitchers borne on the end of a twining prolongation of the leaf.
Heubl and Wistuba (1997) suggested that both Droseraceae and Nepenthaceae had ploidy levels of 8 or 16, based on x = 5 or thereabouts.

Another even more striking result is the grouping of Droseraceae, Drosophyllaceae (the separation of Drosophyllum from Droseraceae is also supported by DNA analysis), Dioncophyllaceae, Ancistrocladaceae, Nepenthaceae, Plumbaginaceae, Polygonaceae, and Simmondsiaceae together in one clade to which the couple Tamaricaceae/Frankeniaceae is the closest sister clade (see Figure 1).
Nevertheless, there are some apparently bridging features to Nepenthaceae (which overlap in some parts of the distributional range with Ancistrocladaceae), viz.
Of course it must be borne in mind that the respective representatives are descendants of evolutionary intermediates and not the intermediates themselves.

Abstract: Molecular support for the monophyly of Droseraceae and its phylogenetic relationships to other dicot families was investigated using parsimony analysis of nucleotide sequences of the large subunit of ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL).
Analysis of 100 species of plants including families of subclasses Rosidae, Hamamelidae, Dilleniidae, and Caryophyllidae (sensu Cronquist) placed monophyletic Droseraceae in the same clade as Caryophyllidae and Nepenthaceae (Dilleniidae).
In a second analysis of 14 species of Droseraceae, 15 caryophyllids, one Nepenthaceae, and three Santalales, a single most-parsimonious tree was found in which Droseraceae are monophyletic, although the position of Drosophyllum as a member of Droseraceae is only weakly supported.

Comparison of DNA sequence data [2] have now permitted a placement within the Caryophyllidae as a sister clade of the carnivorous Drosophyllaceae, in close vicinity to the likewise carnivorous Nepenthaceae and Droseraceae (see Figure 1).
Triphyophyllum, a monotypic genus within the Dioncophyllaceae, is also known to produce carnivorous glandular leaves during a certain period of life [3,4a,4b].
