Nepheline - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
NEPHELINE, a rock-forming mineral consisting of sodium, potassium and aluminium silicate, Na 6 K2A1 8 Si 9 0 34 Its crystals belong to the hexagonal system, and usually have the form of a short six-sided prism terminated by the basal plane.
An important determinative character of nepheline is the ease with which it is decomposed by hydrochloric acid, with separation of gelatinous silica (which may be readily stained by colouring matters) and cubes of salt.
Two varieties of nepheline are distinguished, differing in their external appearance and in their mode of occurrence, being analogous in these respects to sanidine or glassy orthoclase and common orthoclase respectively.

Ceramic heat insulating layer and process for forming same - Patent 5962152   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Nepheline minerals, however, cannot be practically used because, when preparing a slurry from a nepheline mineral powder, alkaline metal ions (typically, Na.sup.+) of the nepheline mineral cause rapid progress of both agglutination of the powder particles and reaction of a binder, and therefore, controlled preparation of slurry cannot actually be realized on commercial scale.
According to the present invention, nepheline mineral particles were coated with a linear siloxane polymer and mixed with a binder to form a slurry, which was then used to form a ceramic heat insulating layer on a bonding layer formed on a base material in the same manner as in Example 1.
The nepheline mineral particles shown by a large blank circle are coated with the linear siloxane polymer shown by a hatched case surrounding the large blank circle.

THERMAL EXPANSION OF NEPHELINE - KALSILITE CRYSTALLINE SOLUTIONS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
The four most sodium-rich nephelines expand at an equivalent rate with respect to temperature, regardless of K:Na ratio.
Three nepheline specimens having higher potassium contents, in which the smaller of the two alkali crystallographic sites is in part occupied by potassium, expand at a slightly greater rate than the more sodic members of the series, as does the tetrakalsilite member of the series.
This difference in behavior is related to the structures of nepheline - kalsilite minerals, which are stuffed derivatives of tridymite in which large channel cations play a different role than is the case for alkali feldspars.

THE THERMAL EXPANSION OF ULTRA-SILICIC NEPHELINE — KALSILITE CRYSTALLINE SOLUTIONS
Interestingly, though, elevated excess Si decreases the coefficient of thermal expansion for nepheline while increasing the same for kalsilite.
When plotted against molar excess Si (or mole fraction vacancies in the alkali site), the coefficients of thermal expansion for nepheline and kalsilite converge toward one another as Si increases, apparently approaching the thermal expansion coefficient for hexagonal tridymite (derived from the high-temperature X-ray data of de Dombal and Carpenter, European Journal of Mineralogy, 1993).
The contrasting expansion behavior of nepheline and kalsilite relative to excess Si must be related to differences in the details of their structures, in particular alkali-site configuration and behavior, as well as the structural location of the excess Si and vacancies.
