Lion of God - David Bruce Clark
Nephesh is the essential spirit that is mostly closely connected with the physical body.
Nephesh is associated with instincts, with appetites, and the cravings and actions that are crucial to basic survival.
Nephesh is not the spirit portion that consciously communicates with Elohim; it is the unconscious spirit that minds the body.

 Nephesh
The correct Latin word for the theological term "soul" (or nephesh) is anima; and this is from the Greek anemos = air or breath, because it is this which keeps the whole in life and in being.
The first occurrence of nephesh is in Gen. 1:20, "the moving creature that hath life (nephesh)".
Nephesh is used of Man, (a) as being "cut off" by God; (b) and as being slain of killed by man, in fifty-four passages : and is rendered in eight different ways :--

Nephesh is a Hebrew word that is used in a large number of occurrences in the Old Testament.
With a word such as nephesh that is used such a large number of times, and with a broad range of contextual meanings, you must be very careful in determining the true meaning.

 The "Soul" and the "Spirit"
We know that nephesh and psuche are equivalent or carry essentially the same meanings because the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Septuagint, uses the Greek word to render the Hebrew term.
Nephesh can be applied to animals as well as human beings, and thus, either are "souls" (Genesis 1:20, 24, 30; Ezekiel 47:9).
Nephesh is not used for anything like the "spirit" of the dead, and this is important to note in any discussion about any supposed transcendental nature of "soul." Quite simply put, when the Hebrew word for "soul" is used, nothing more than the person as such – as human being – is meant.

The Old Testament View of Human Nature
The soul (nephesh) and the spirit (ruach) are used in the Old Testament to denote, not immaterial entities capable of surviving the body at death, but a whole spectrum of physical and psychological functions.
Nephesh was designed to be seen together with the whole form of man, and especially with his breath; moreover man does not have nephesh [soul], he is nephesh [soul], he lives as nephesh [soul].
The truth of the matter is that nephesh is found in the Hebrew, but translators usually chose to render it with "person," presumably because of their belief that the soul is immortal and cannot be killed.

 What is a soul?
The word translated 'soul' in the Hebrew language is 'nephesh' and occurs 683 times in the O.T. By comparing Psalms 16:10 with Acts 2:27, the Holy Spirit reveals to us that the Greek word for 'soul' in the N.T. is 'psuche' and it occurs 95 times.
The first occurrence of the word ‘nephesh’, translated 'soul' in the KJV, is in Gen. 2:7 and refers to the creation of man. But the first occurrence of 'nephesh' occurs before that in Gen. 1:20 and refers to the living creatures of the seas.
The word ‘nephesh’, translated ‘soul’ is also used as pronouns for persons, such as, ‘himself’, ‘themselves’, ‘yourselves’, ‘herself’, and ‘he’.

One thing that I've come across with many EBM practitioners is that they while they create dynamic music generally delivering on the promise of some notion of innovation and distinctness, rarely do the songs, save for one or two, jump out as an individual voice demanding to be heard again and again.

  Soul and Spirit
The elemental meaning of the word "soul" (nephesh) is that which breathes: "To all the beasts of the earth and to all the birds of the air and to all creeping things on the earth, wherein is the breath [nephesh] of life, I have given green plants for food" (Genesis 1:30).
The first time that most versions insert the word "soul" (nephesh) is in Genesis 2:7: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul [nephesh]" (KJV).
In this particular verse, where the word nephesh twice means "life," the reference is to the life of an animal being sacrificed, and the word nephesh (plural) meaning "souls," the reference is to the immortal souls of "the children of Israel" (cf.

 Trichotomy Chapter 2
The root idea of nephesh and related cognate words in Akkadian and Ugaritic is "throat," or "breath." Brown, Driver, and Briggs' lexicon classifies ten shades of meaning for this word, including "soul," "life," "creature," "person," and "mind." [13] Nephesh identifies that which breathes.
that when nephesh is applied to a dead person, it is used to emphasize their identity as persons who have died, not to equate nephesh with the body.
Since it conveys the idea of breathing, nephesh is usually associated with the physical nature of man. However, this emphasis in Hebrew thought must not ignore the texts cited above which indicate that the soul is distinct and separable from the body.

The nephesh of Genesis and the psuche in Greek are the same in meaning.
When you pointed out the explanation in both nephesh and pneuma you bypassed the physical aspect of the flesh and blood body and zeroed in on the words reflecting the mind and the human soul that has left the body which is not depicted in the scriptures.
The Hebrew nephesh is the same as the Greek psuche, which without it breathing it is not alive, but needs the breath of life to activate the functions of the body.

This discrepancy between the Hebrew nephesh and the English soul creates an idiom: "a construction or expression of one language whose parts correspond to elements in another language but whose total structure or meaning is not matched in the same way in the second language".
So whether we think of his nephesh as his life or his soul, the uniqueness of this passage resides in the fact that Jezebel wanted Elijah's nephesh to be just as dead as the nephesh of her dead friends.
Thus we may conclude that because man becomes a living nephesh or soul when he receives the breath of life within his flesh, he will no longer be a living nephesh or soul when he is no longer able to breathe the breath of life.

People and animals are described in Genesis as having, or being, nephesh (Hebrew) — see Genesis 1:20-21, 24 where nephesh chayyah is translated “living creatures,” and Genesis 2:7 where Adam became a “living soul” (nephesh chayyah).
Nephesh conveys the basic idea of a “breathing creature.” It is also used widely in the Old Testament, in combination with other words, to convey ideas of emotions, feelings, etc. Perhaps nephesh refers to life with a certain level of consciousness.
It tells us that “the life (nephesh) of the flesh is in the blood” (Leviticus 17:11; also see Genesis 9:4).
