Matjaz Kuntner - Australia Photo Gallery
The main goals were to observe and collect araneoid spiders, and to find a sample of representative Australian spiders to be preserved at the Zoological Museum of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, USA.
One of the foci of this expedition was on the systematics of nephiline spiders (Tetragnathidae), of which no less than five genera occur in Australia (Nephila, Nephilengys, Herennia, Deliochus, and Phonognatha).
This makes Australia the premier nephiline hot spot in the world in terms of not only species diversity but also undocumented behaviours.

 In Cold Blood
A mysterious compound known as Blue Nephiline has been discovered in the former Soviet Republic of Volgia.
It is rumored that the compound is a natural superconductor and using it would make Volgia’s weapons more advanced than anything in the West.
The fate of the world is in your capable hands, and only you can discover the truth behind Blue Nephiline in IN COLD BLOOD.

Nephiline spiders are currently the subject of a worldwide taxonomic revision and phylogenetic treatment.
A preliminary phylogenetic analysis suggests that Deliochus and the remaining true nephilines are monophyletic.
Nephiline species are known for their interesting and sometimes bizarre sexual behavior.

Later, Singafrotypa Benoit, 1962 and Perilla Thorell, 1895 were included in nephilines.
The little known “nephiline” genera, African Singafrotypa and Asian Perilla, were transferred to the araneid subfamily Araneinae (Kuntner and Hormiga, 2002; Kuntner, 2002) where they have remained (Platnick, 2006).
My doctoral work (Kuntner, 2005) has focused on the systematics and evolution of true nephiline spiders.

In Cold Blood: Blue Nephiline is a natural superconductor that will allow the rogue nation of Volgia to build weapons more advanced than anything found in the West.
You take the role of British agent John Cord as he works his way through nine missions in an effort to get more information on Blue Nephiline.
In all of the missions using stealth to avoid the guards will pay bigger dividends than going in with guns blazing so keep that weapon holstered as long as you can.

Details of web-construction behaviour and morphology support the monophyly of nephiline spiders with Phonognatha as the sister-group to the remaining nephiline genera examined in this study.
Phylogenetic analysis of the behavioural data suggests that specialisations in nephiline building behaviour and web architecture did not evolve concurrently, and that some preceded the female giantism (not male dwarfism) for which nephiline spiders are well-known.
