Nephites - MormonWiki - Mormonism - the LDS Church, Beliefs & Religion
When Nephi’s family arrived in the America’s the group split into two rival groups, the Nephites who followed Nephi and for the most part were righteous followers of God, and the Lamanites who followed Nephi’s older brother’s Laman and Lemuel and who opposed the Nephites throughout most of their history.
It is important to note, that the names Nephite and Lamanite were names used by the Nephites to distinguish themselves and their enemies.
Finally, it should be noted that the Nephites were always a small minority in the Book of Mormon, surrounded by many other numerous peoples who often did not speak the same language, as one instance of dissident Nephites teaching their language to other groups indicates.

 Nephite Calendar
The Nephite year seems to consist of twelve months because the eleventh month was "nearly at the end" of the year (Alma 46:37, 49:1).
Thus, combining all of the above results, it is proposed that the Nephite calendar from the time of Lehi to the coming of Christ to the Nephites had twelve months of 30-days each, with 5 days at the end of the year, as did the Egyptian civil calendar, with the day beginning at dawn.
A detailed model for the Nephite Calendar from the time of Lehi to Christ's appearance to the Nephites has been presented which is totally self-consistent with other dates published by this author for the departure of Lehi, the birth and death of Christ, and all internal Nephite dates of the Book of Mormon.

The political Nephite state existed with clear borders (Alma 22:27) and within it lived people who were religious Nephites and also those who did not practice the Nephite religion (Alma 31:8), due to freedom of religion which was upheld by their laws (Alma 1:17; 30:7).

This commentary presumes on the basis of the king-name evidence that Mosiah did not lead all of the Nephites from the city of Nephi, and therefore the people of Mosiah I were a smaller subset of the larger Nephite population (which eventually becomes considered Lamanite on the basis of political differences).
On the Nephite side of the equation we would have half the original Lehites becoming a minority among a larger population of Mulekites, while the Lamanites would be greater than twice the number of the Nephites and Mulekites together.
Nephite baptism exists, but there is no indication that it is used as a marker of entrance into a specific covenant that differed from the greater social covenant of Israel.

When the Nephites unceremoniously dump the bodies of their enemies in the river, they are enacting a disrespect for their enemies, and perhaps a more serious denial of afterlife to the enemy dead.
The Nephites were certainly not immune to this trait of humanity, and their perceptions of the inferiority of the Lamanites colored their descriptions of them.
The essential Nephite description of their enemy appears to require a description of their attire, with an emphasis on their nakedness, the shaved heads, a description of skin around the loins, perhaps a breastplate, and then a catalog of weaponry.

FIAR has asserted that the lack of archaeological evidence to support the historicity of the Nephites (in specific, the lack of evidence for their cities and culture) is, in part, due to the current incomplete nature of archaeological studies of Meso-America in general, and maintains that as further evidence is gathered, this situation may change.

Government and Legal History of The Book of Mormon
From the beginning, the Nephite legal system was based on the Law of Moses as it was written in the scriptures, as it was possibly practiced by Israel in the seventh century B.C., and as it was modified (slightly) over the years until the coming of Jesus Christ.
Noah, a king of one Nephite subgroup (the people of Zeniff), exploited the weaknesses of the Nephite system, sustaining himself and his council of corrupt priests in riotous living from the labors of the people.
Nephite leaders seem to have viewed new legislation as presumptuous and generally evil (Mosiah 29:23) and any change of God's law without authority as blasphemous (Jacob 7:7).

They sent vast armies into Nephite territory, won a battle or two, and then were defeated with a huge loss of life and driven back to their own lands.
But the Lamanite armies failed so consistently for eight hundred years, never actually conquering a Nephite people for more than a few years at any one time so far as can be known, that it is difficult to believe that the expectation of tribute sustained the Lamanites through all their losses.
It was nearly impossible for many of the Nephites to see anything gentle or loving in Lamanite life, because the boundary between the two peoples was defined by the founding saga as one of perpetual war.

Nephite army sizes coincided with general demographic growth: Armies numbered in the thousands in the first century B.C. and in the tens of thousands in the fourth century A.D. It appears that Book of Mormon military organization was aristocratic and dominated by a highly trained hereditary elite.
The final Nephite wars (A.D. 322, 327-328, 346-350) began after heavy population growth and infestation of robbers led to a border dispute, and the Nephites were driven to a narrow neck of land.

In the third century B.C., when the Nephite leader Mosiah1 and his company moved from the land of Nephi down to the Sidon river, "they discovered a people, who were called the people of Zarahemla" (Omni 1:13-14) because their ruler bore that name.
A reason for their split with the Nephites was evidently recollection of what had happened to their founding ancestor: Ammoron, dissenter from the Nephites and king of the Lamanites in the first century B.C., recalled: "I am…a descendant of Zoram, whom your fathers pressed and brought out of Jerusalem" (Alma 54:23).
Some years later, desiring to assist the Nephite armies in defending the land but not wishing to break their covenant (Alma 53:13), the people of Ammon sent 2,000 of their willing sons to be soldiers, since their sons had not taken the covenant of nonviolence that they had.

Thus the principal Nephite calendar during the reign of the judges was composed of more than eleven months, with the eleventh month coming near the end of the calendar.
Because the Nephite year was characterized as having a commencement and a latter end (apparently different from "nearly the end"), a logical possibility is that the year was divided in two.
Moreover, the Nephites' two-part year may reflect their attempt to maintain a sense of calendrical continuity with the Israelite spring- and autumn-oriented lunar calendars described in the Hebrew scriptures and discussed earlier.

Their conclusions are based on a number of major problems that arise when one attempts to apply Book of Mormon descriptions of travel times and population growth to the vast territories of North and South America.
For instance, while the Book of Mormon makes it clear that the rival Nephite and Lamanite civilizations were centered near the "narrow neck" of land (understood to be somewhere in Central America), it says that they agreed to meet for their epic final battle at the "hill Cumorah" (Mormon 6:1-6).
