Nerang Real Estate - Nerang LIfestyle, Historical Synopsis
While much of Nerang's early history, since white settlement, could be said to be centered around a few key plantations and families, we can see that the dedication, hard work and perseverance of many people allowed the township to push through difficult times and establish a thriving community.
The Nerang River, known as the Barrow for a short period of time, was used as a supply line not only for the settlers in the area, but as a means of sending out their wares – both timber and crops – to Brisbane for sale.
Nerang also established itself as a supplier to the local boom in building in Southport and surrounding areas as timber was in demand, along with the tools and labour to cope with rapid construction.

The other reason was the plentiful food resources accessible from Nerang, with freshwater fish in the river, many sea foods available on the coastal strip and in the Broad water and a variety of plant and animal foods found within the Hinterland forests up into the Numinbah Valley.
One such incident (1860) near Nerang involved QNMP opening fire on a group of Gombemberri camped on the Nerang River banks, killing an old blind man. Countrywide treatment of the Aboriginal people was often brutal and cruel, with settlers regarding them as ‘savages’ (see William Lines, 1991, for details).
The 1876 parish maps of the Nerang district demonstrate that extensive areas of land had been ‘alienated’ for farming, pushing the surviving Gombemberri into the remnant marginal areas of the Hinterland.

Extensive research revealed that with the magnitude of the northward drift of the sand along the coastline (some 500,000 cubic metres a year), any scheme to stabilise the river entrance would also need to artificially bypass sand across the river mouth indefinitely.
The Nerang River entrance to the Pacific Ocean, a centre for commercial and recreational boating alike, has suffered from instability due to a strong northerly drift along the shoreline.
This meant that the river mouth was constantly moving, sometimes as much as 60 metres in a year.
