In Nereididae, the first pair of tentacular cirri appears on the peristomial region (e.g., Blake 1975) and their inervation patterns are indicative of a segmental origin (Orrhage 1993).
In other words, the first somite of Nereididae was added to the cephalic region, appearing connected to the peristomium already in the embryo.
The first tentacular cirri of Nereididae and the palps of Spionida are peristomial in position throughout development, but their inervation is clearly metameric (Orrhage 1964, 1966, 1974, 1993).

 Nechama Ben-Eliahu Remarks
Thanks to the research of H. Zibrowius, H.A. ten Hove, and G. Pillai and others, one of the best-reviewed polychaete taxa is Serpulidae, which makes the distribution data on this family more reliable than that of many others.
Nereididae are similar to Serpulidae in the number of successful Lessepsian migrant taxa.
However, other families may be of equal interest as concerns Lessepsian migrants, and I may not have yet become aware of that due to my particular interest in the nereids and serpulids.

Nereididae Johnston, 1865, part of the large clade Phyllodocida, is one of the best-known annelid groups.
Type species for the majority of currently recognised nereidid genera were used as terminal taxa, and character information was based on examination of type and non-type specimens, together with literature descriptions.
High degrees of homoplasy were found for several features that are traditionally applied to delineate subgroups of Nereididae, including the presence of paragnaths and the distribution of different kinds of chaetae.

IngentaConnect Phylogeny of nereidids (Polychaeta, Nereididae) with paragnaths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
A phylogenetic analysis was conducted of the Nereidinae — those members of the Nereididae (Polychaeta) with pharyngeal paragnaths.
We had two objectives: to test the monophyly of currently accepted genera, subgenera and informal subgeneric groupings within the Nereidinae, and, if warranted, to propose a more natural classification of the Nereidinae.
The most parsimonious trees could not be rooted such that the selected ingroup, ‘Nereididae with paragnaths’, was monophyletic, causing us to reject the monophyly of the Nereidinae as currently defined.

Systematic representation is broad for almost all known families of polychaetes, but especially outstanding in Nereididae, Phyllodocidae, Cirratulidae, Chaetopteridae, Sabellidae and Serpulidae, as well as in most holoplanktonic families.
Of great potential value are the large numbers of as yet unidentified lots from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, primarily collected during the various expeditions led by Th.

The muscular axial proboscis is a development for predation and scavenging and characterizes the Phyllodocida of Dales, also recognized by Rouse and Fauchald (1997).
Phyllodocida is a large group containing among others, the Acoetidae, Aphroditidae, Eulepethidae, Polynoidae, Chrysopetalidae, Glyceridae, Goniadidae, Paralacyoniidae, Pisionidae, Lactdoniidae, Phyllodocidae, Nephtyidae, Nereididae, Hesionidae, Pilargidae, Sphaerodoridae, and Syllidae.
The proboscis in aphroditids, glycerids, nephthyids, phyllodocids and polynoids is similar in having a long cylindrical crushing and, in at least some cases, sucking pharynx made up of concentric lamellae of circular or radial muscle.

Williamstown is adjacent to where shipping enters the Port of Melbourne, and these observations suggest that recently-introduced species of polydorids may now be present in Port Phillip Bay.
Other systematic research on polychaetes underway includes phylogenetic revision of Nereidinae, a subfamily of Nereididae (a joint project with Torkild Bakken, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim), and a taxonomic revision of Australian and New Zealand Phyllodocidae worms, leading to new information on trans-Tasman biogeographic relationships.
Future research interests include studies using molecular systematic techniques to investigate relationships between populations of estuarine Nereididae and the history of those estuaries, as well as biogeographic and molecular studies of deep sea taxa.

In these two studies there is full consensus on the monophyly of a group including Hesionidae, Nereididae and Chrysopetalidae, as evidenced by the presence of a special internal structure in the chaetae (compartmentalized medulla), and—possibly—by having biarticulated palps, although this latter feature may be present as a homoplasy in some other groups as well.
