nereis was not a distinct subspecies but rather a variation of a northwest-southeast cline (31,32).
nereis should continue to be recognized as a valid subspecies, based on existing morphological and behavioral differences between the populations, and the degree of geographical and genetic isolation characterizing the sea otter population in California.

Lumbricus is a burrowing deposit feeder in soils, Nereis is an herbivorous sea worm, while Chaetopterus is a tube-dwelling, marine suspension feeder.
Lumbricus and Nereis show similar body plans of similar segments, but differ in the type of appendages they have per segment, and in their head morphology.
Note that some organs (e.g., gut) traverse the body across the segments, others (e.g., coelomic cavity, nephridia) are confined to one or two segments, and are serially repeated.

 Marine Worms Polychaeta
The sexes can sometimes be easily told apart as in the case of the Ragworm Nereis diversicolor, where originally both sexes are brown, but when they reach breeding condition; the males change to green while the females are a much darker green.
There are free moving species that improve their reproductive chances by swarming to breed such as Nereis virens.
Worms have many predators hence they remain hidden and are not often seen, more common being traces of their existence such as their casts or egg cases.
