  Nereocystis luetkeana
Viewed from underwater, the canopy is a analogous to a forest canopy.
Plants consist of a long stipe (up to 36 m/118') attached to the ocean floor by a holdfast composed of numerous haptera (finger-like projections) and terminated above, on the ocean surface, by a single float from which a cluster of tightly branched smooth blades arise.
The spores are produced on the blades at the ocean surface, often several metres above the ocean floor, but a critical concentration of spores is required near where the parent plant is successfully established to assure re-occupation of this optimal space once the annual plant is lost.

It is so frustrating that Nereocystis has become so skilled in keeping people who drop by here from actually being able to help us get this resolved (or from exploiting other people's anti-polygamy biases who drop by as another way of to preventing resolution that happening).
Yet Nereocystis has proven to be so abusive as the bully they are, they even refuse to even allow that very easy perfect NPOV resolution there.
Of course, it will also be helpful if Nereocystis would now abandon their abusively bully behavior and instead put forth a good faith act in that case as well by doing the easy thing needed there.

 Coastal Kelp Resources: Introduction
Nereocystis luetkeana occurs from Point Conception to the eastern Aleutian Islands (Druehl 1970), and is the dominant, surface canopy kelp north of Santa Cruz, California.
Nereocystis is predominately an annual (Abbot and Hollenberg 1976), although mature plants have been seen to persist for up to 18 months.
Mixed canopies, containing both Nereocystis and Macrocystis, are present along much of the California coast-line from Sandhill Bluff (Santa Cruz County) to Port San Luis (San Luis Obispo County), and when these species co-occur, Nereocystis is most commonly found inshore and Macrocystis offshore (Foster and Schiel 1985).

 Research Done on Nereocystis
Nereocystis also plays an important part in several communites.
As a rooted algae, it is an important constituent of Pacific coast kelp forests.
Studies have examined the effect of increased carbon dioxide on the growth of this algae (Thom 1996).

 Kelp Forests
Nereocystis luetkeana often dominates northeastern Pacific kelp forests.
The very upper story Nereocystis is an annual plant, however, and it and other species are slowly displaced by Laminaria groenlandica, which shades and inhibits the growth of newly arrived spores.
Like Nereocystis it can grow several cm a day and extends many meters from the bottom towards the surface.

MBNMS 2000 Kelp Management Plan: 7.0 Draft Recommendations to the State of California
Before hand harvesting of Nereocystis is allowed to continue in the MBNMS, the MBNMS would like to see more research done on how localized harvesting of Nereocystis might affect this plant's distribution and abundance.
The MBNMS is not concerned with small by-catch harvests of Nereocystis by large mechanical harvesters south of the Monterey Peninsula.
Because Nereocystis is not highly desirable for its alginate content and is difficult to harvest mechanically, the MBNMS believes the only harvests of Nereocystis that will occur will be below the existing 5% limit set by current DFG regulations.

 antithamnion distribution and ecology
This study found that young Nereocystis plants appeared in April, and epiphytes began to colonize them by June, but were not abundant until August.
The lack of Antithamnion on the lowest part of the stipe was hypothesized to be due to snail grazing, as Antithamnion is abundant on rocks on the benthos.
However, the fact that Antithamnion is found on Nereocystis stipes which are usually in areas with high wave action indicates that it probably can withstand significant water motion.

Nereocystis luetkeana, the major surface-canopy forming kelp in Kachemak Bay, has a distribution that appears to be dictated by the salinity and turbidity gradients.
Salinity and turbidity are known to influence growth and survival rates of various kelp species but no work has specifically looked at the distribution of Nereocystis in Alaska.
I propose to map the spatial distribution of the kelp beds of Kachemak Bay using aerial photography and GIS technology and to investigate the role of salinity and turbidity gradients in the distribution pattern.
