It is built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Atlantic Coast.

Communication across the river is afforded by five bridges, of which the oldest, San Antonio, is of stone, and dates from the 14th century.
The houses in the principal streets are built of hewn stone, and are several storeys high, with projecting eaves that give shelter from both sun and rain.
For a long time no carts or carriages were permitted to enter the city for fear of polluting and injuring the pavement, and the transport of goods was carried on in hand-carts.

The broad flight of stairs that goes up to the sculptural tower, conceived as a device to absorb and integrate the Puente de La Salve into the overall architectural scheme of the building, is also a public access way that connects pedestrians with the rest of the city.

 Welcome to Bizkaia Maitea
At that time Bilbao was a small iron-working and maritime settlement situated on the left bank of the River Nervión on the lower slopes of Mount Miravilla.
In the 19th century, with the annexation of the neighbouring township of Abando, the city began to spread away from the river banks and there was a considerable increase in its population, while at the same time the foundations were laid for a modern city with wide streets, avenues, squares, promenades and parks.
Geographical limitations - the city is surrounded by mountains - have meant that successive increases in population have had to be absorbed by the adjoining towns along the River Nervión, to form a large metropolis with a population of 900,000.

The basins of the rivers Oiartzun, Artibai, Deba, Bidasoa, Urumea, Uroa, Oria, Oka, Barbadun, Butron, Lea, Urola and Nervion are polluted, according to a report of the regional government of Baskongadak's Environment Department released this week.
The land area drained by rivers and its tributaries, known as a river basin, is the basic unit for understanding the sources and effects of freshwater pollution as well as the ecological relationships between terrestial and aquatic systems.
Eventually, some of the water may enter tributary streams and rivers, into which a third source of pollution, sewage and industrial wastewater, is discharged directly.

A major seaport and industrial centre, it is located on the river Nervión, and its suburbs extend to the Bay of Biscay.
This is matter of confussion because both rivers the Nervión (Basque "Nerbioi") and Ibaizabal meet shortly before entering the city and reaching the stuary (precisely in Bilbao).
The Ibaizabal is a longer river and therefore, according to all geographic criteria should be considered (and actually is considered offcially) the river that reaches Bilbao but centuries of Spanish (Castilian) influence have made the Nervión much more known, because its course was approximately that of the roads that went into Castile.
