  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Oglethorpe University
The institution holds the finest portrait of Oglethorpe and the only painting of his wife, Elizabeth.
The collegiate coat of arms, emblazoned with three boars' heads and the inscription Nescit cedere ("He does not know how to give up"), replicates the Oglethorpe family standard.
For the college athletic teams, Jacobs chose an unusual mascot—a small, persistent seabird that, according to legend, inspired Oglethorpe while on board the ship Anne on the way to Georgia.

Quite often in these situations Propertius inserts the figure of the god in a gnomic statement underscoring a basic theme of his power.
For example, 1.5.23 (nescit Amor priscis cedere imaginibus) mocks Gallus's noble birth and emphasizes by way of contrast the life of the poet different from that of the arrogant Gallus.
That is to say, Propertius suggests that Love is a force or obsession that overpowers the lure of wealth and good breeding.

While president, Jacobs had a magnificent hand-carved historic coat of arms created to hang in office. The crest, carved of wood in Switzerland, was based on the coat of arms of the Oglethorpe family.
Jacobs replaced the Latin family motto from Nescit Cedere, "He who does not know how to give up," to Manu Dei Resurrexit, "By God's hand it is resurrected," which became an early motto of the University.
For over five decades, the wooden coat of arms has hung in the home of Jacobs' son, which Carrie Jacobs Henderson inherited.
