Neshoba County was established by the Mississippi legislature on December 23, 1833.
However, hundreds of Neshoba County men were killed in battle, died from the “fevers” that plagued Civil War camps, or were maimed for life by federal shot and shell.
By 1880 the county’s natural timber resources were becoming an important economic factor, and by 1910 Neshoba County sawmills were too numerous to count.

The Neshoba County Fair has its roots in the agricultural fairs and the church camp meetings popular in the nineteenth century.
The Lake Patron's Union in Scott County was a regional fair held on the former site of a Methodist camp meeting and served as a model for Neshoba Countians wanting to establish a fair of their own.
The Neshoba County Fair has grown from a two-day meeting of local farmers and their families to an eight day Giant House Party in over 600 cabins and over 200 RV campers.

The county seat for Neshoba County, Philadelphia, is the setting for racial tensions depicted in the Civil Rights movie “Mississippi Burning.” In 1964, three Civil Rights workers were murdered after coming to Philadelphia to increase the African American vote.

 Choctaw Towns in Newton County
The aborigines of Newton county lived in rude cabins, which stood in what may be termed straggling towns, with fields of Indian corn and patches of vegetables intervening.
As that town is placed to the south of West Mokalusa Town in Neshoba county and to the east of Chunky creek, it is almost certain that this town, the name of which is illegible almost, is almost certain that this is the town of Bissasha.
There was a trail that led from this town easterly to Mokalusha Town in Neshoba county, and westerly to a town in Newton county called “Okhata Talaia”, Spreading pond, which was situated in the southwest quarter of section 11, township 7, range 10, east.

Leroy Clemons, a Neshoba County native and co-chair of the Philadelphia Coalition, a multi-racial task force that was charged with planning the 40th anniversary commemoration of the 1964 slayings, said he had mixed emotions about Killen being arrested and charged with murder.
Neshoba County has been hurt by businesses not wanting to relocate here because what happened 40 years ago and because nothing was ever done about it.

One year after the formation of Newton County, James Ellis was operating a tavern and store in Decatur, and he kept very accurate accounts of the business transactions between himself and the people of the area.
Ellis, as a member of the legislature from Neshoba County, petitioned that body on behalf of the citizens of Neshoba County who wished for a new county to be called Newton.
After Newton County was formed, Ellis served as the first elected representative of the new county, serving from 1836 to 1841.
