Ottoman Turks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The early Yâkût period was supplanted in the late 1400's by a new style pioneered by Seyh Hamdullah (1429-1520) which became the basis for Ottoman Calligraphy.
Focusing on the nesih version of the script, which became the standard for copying the Qur'an (See Arabic Calligraphy).
The late calligraphic style of the Ottomans was created by Mustafa Râkim (1757-1826) as an extension and reform of Osman's style, and placing greater emphasis on technical perfection which broadened the calligraphic art to encompass the sülüs script as well as the nesih script which had been the dominant standard script.

The traditional art of Turkish calligraphy - Turkish Daily News Apr 19, 2003
The cursive form of sls or celŒ sls in which the words or groups of letters are joined is known as mselsel and the device whereby a word or group of words are written twice as a symmetrical mirror image interlocking down the centre is known as msennƒ.
Although the characters of nesih are curved, they must invariably be arranged in lines, so are not appropriate for calligraphic compositions.
Nesih has most often been used for writing long texts, above all the Koran, and the first typeface used by Turkish printers was nesih.

Persian Nesih, in contrast, is stultifyingly dull and immobile.
Nesih is deceptively hard to write well; it must not look forced or contrived, but natural and organic.
It was said of Kadiasker Mustafa Izzet Efendi’s Nesih that it resembled in its naturalness a flight of butterflies.

In the case of long texts such as Korans, this causes a problem, because even the slightest difference in the width of the nib after recutting noticeably alters the appearance of the writing, which constitutes a serious aesthetic flaw, particularly in the case of nesih and similar fine hands.
Therefore, when writing long texts in fine script, pens made from the hard, straight and slender stipule, fl in color, which grows from the base of the leaves of a tropical tree in Java is used.
Holding the pen so that the slanted edge of the nib rests fully on the paper and moving it downwards produces a fine line, and moving it from right to left results in a thick line.

Of the six scripts inherited from Yâkût, sülüs and nesih, which were especially compatible with Turkish taste, spread rapidly during the Seyh Hamdullah era, and nesih became the only script used to copy the Koran.
Due to the paucity of rounded characters and the broad shape of muhakkak and reyhânî, these hands were gradually abandoned, until eventually they were used solely as exercises by calligraphers to improve their dexterity.
It was with Mustafa Râkim that, as in the case of sülüs and nesih, celî sülüs achieved a superlative excellence in terms both of the characters and composition that had never before been matched in any calligraphic style.
