  NES Emulation
Well, I had been putting off updating the NES page.....that was until I saw NESticle.
You have probably already heard people raving about NESticle, and with an accurate palatte, great compatibility, perfect speed, and digital sound support, combined with a great interface, NESticle has taken over NES emulation.
Ines was the first great NES emulator, It isn't as good as NESticle however, though it can run a few games which NESticle has problems with.

Emu X Haven - Whats The Better Nes Emulator?
Nesticle stays around for hacking purposes, but I think the only ROM hacking feature it has left is the nametable data viewer (finding the coordinates of a certain tile in the tilemap, which admittably is only a slightly useful feature).
Not that Nesticle was a bad emulator, it's just so outdated (isn't it now five years since it's been updated?).
Many people I know laugh at how absolutely dreadful Nesticle is and how many roms were hacked to work with it since it poorly emulated the NES.

Bloodlust Software's NESticle is considered by many to be the best and worst thing to happen to the emulation "scene." You can read more about it on my Glossary page, but basically the point is this: before NESticle, most people discovered emulation while searching for info on their favorite classic console or console copier.
When NESticle was released, MindRape, from the infamous grey area information group Damaged Cybernetics, (for more on DC, peruse Archaic Ruins or a pair of editorials written by Zophar about the death of DC and the first anniversary of NESticle) stole the source from Bloodlust.
NESticle hasn't been updated since January 1998, and even though it's still some people's NES emu of choice, programs like fwNES are becoming better and better all the time, and are an increasing threat to NESticle's crown.

Console emulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In April 1997, Bloodlust Software released version 0.2 of NESticle.
An unheralded and unexpected release, NESticle shocked the nascent console emulation community with its ease of use and unrivaled compatibility with NES ROM images.
NESticle arguably provided the catalyst with which console emulation took off: More and more users started experimenting with console emulation, and a new generation of emulators appeared following NESticle's lead.

 Nesticle (thing)@Everything2.com
NESticle is the name of a popular but disgustingly inaccurate NES emulator for DOS, from Bloodlust Software.
The emulator is based on an old version of reverse-engineered NES documentation; even though it runs most commercial NES software that was popular in the United States, its timing is way off, and it has trouble running some of the more intense titles such as Solar Jetman.
Do NOT use NESticle as your primary testbed if you're developing software for the NES platform; use FCE Ultra for Windows or Linux instead.
