Neston is a small residential town governed by the Ellesmere Port and Neston council.
Neston is a former mining town, with shafts dug out underneath the River Dee, and was also a major port before the river Dee silted up and the port was shifted further upstream to the nearby town of Parkgate.
Lord Nelson's mistress, Emma Hamilton, was born in Neston.

James Heald (1796-1873) was born at Portwood near Stockport in Cheshire, the son of a wealthy Methodist calico-printer of the same name.
He was educated in Rochdale and was converted as a young man. Heald wound up his father’s business shortly after James senior’s death in 1816 and moved to Manchester with a vague intention of entering the Anglican ministry.
He commenced his ministry as a home missionary in 1808 at Neston in Cheshire and went on to enjoy an active circuit ministry mainly in the North of England until superannuation in 1851.
