At the Greek village of Paranestion, the river slows as it enters the Nestos Valley and the coastal plain of Chrysoupolis.
The lakes and wetlands of the Nestos Valley have survived thousands of years of human history, but now are confronting unprecedented challenges, primarily from industrial methods of agriculture, careless waste, and governmental neglect.
The richness and diversity of the Nestos lake and delta system also are being undermined by other, smaller-scale activities, such as illegal draining of ponds and the disposal of garbage and rubble into wetland areas.

Nestos is a transboundary river, with the 60% of the catchment area belonging to Bulgaria and the rest to Greece.
Nestos river was chosen as a reference area, as an example of the promotion of the collaboration of countries for integrated transboundary water resources management, having the special characteristic of Greece being already a European Union member while Bulgaria is being a candidate member and a former Eastern Europe country.
In the basin of Nestos several geothermal manifestastions and geothermal fields exist (for example, the geothermal fields of Eratino - Chrysoupolis and Neo Erasmio - Magana).The mean monthly flow of the river at the bulgarian catchment is about 0.12-1.80 m3/s while at the greek 10-150 m3/s.

The Nestos river " the river of life" as it was very wisely called, is the natural boundary between Thrace and Macedonia.
Its springs are in the Rila mountains of Bulgaria and after a flow of 233 kilometres, through deep valleys, ravines and meanders in the section between Stavroupolis and Toxotes, it comes to its delta exactly opposite the island of Thasos just after the famous forest of Kotza Orman.
Apart from everything else the Nestos passage has been a way out from the mountains to the sea since antiquity while from 1891 the railroad on the river bank with a majestic trip through 30 tunnels has revitalized ali the nearby villages.

The mouth of Nestos will be set-a-side only for protection and habitat restoration and local fisherman will be compensated with the installation of two small moles outside the core area.
In the Nestos Gorge a feeding scheme (like in the area of Dadia, Evros) for large raptor species, especially vultures, will be set into function, including the construction of a larger observation hide for visitors and several other smaller observation and survey installations.
In the Nestos Gorge the population of the vultures and eagles will be stabilized and even increased due to the reduction of losses (poaching) outside the protected sites and the increasing survival rate of youngster due to availability of food.

The Nestos River begins on Mt. Rila in Bulgaria and travels 234kms through the Rhodope Mountains to reach the Aegean sea east of Keramoti.
Within Greece, the 140kms, from the Central Rodopi Forests on the Bulgarian border, down through the Nestos Gorge to the vast expanse of lakes and marshes of the Delta, are of exceptional importance for wildlife.
Further information on the Nestos Delta can be gained by visiting the government-run Visitor Centre in Keramoti, behind the Secondary School just ten minutes walk from the harbour.

The basement of the Nestos basin consits of metamoprhic rocks of the Rhodope massif (mainly gneisses, amphibolites and marbles).
In the basin of Nestos several geothermal manifestastions and geothermal fields exist (for example, the geothermal fields of Eratino - Chrysoupolis and Neo Erasmio - Magana).
The reservoir contains Na-CI waters with TDS of 7-8 g/l (as determined from measurements during the drilling of N-1G) and its extend should be considered as equal to that of the area of high geothermal gradient.

The 18 small Nestos Lakes and 8 brackish Lagoons are part of the large Nestos Delta, located in northeast Greece, about 200 km to the east of Thessaloniki.
The excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides in the delta region is causing big problems, and the water quality of the lagoons and lakes deteriorates constantly.
Recently EPO is involved in EU supported Life projects for the management of the wetlands, creating buffer zones, vegetated filter strips, re-connection of old river branches, reforestation of riparian forest, construction of breeding islets for terns and other waterbirds, as well as setting up a feeding scheme for vultures.

 Meetings make progress for the Nestos Delta Ramsar site, Greece
The Ramsar Site "Nestos Delta and Adjoining Lagoons" was designated on 21 August 1975 when Greece joined the Convention, comprising an extensive delta complex, including saltmarshes, freshwater lakes, coastal lagoons, dune systems and the largest remaining area of riparian forest in Greece.
Currently, the European Commission (Directorate General Environment) is assessing whether such installations would violate any EU directives (on the conservation of natural habitats, flora and fauna, on environmental impacts, and on dangerous substances and the risk of accidents).
The construction of several dams upstream of the extremely rich and beautiful Nestos Gorge had substantial impact on the ecological character of the riverine floodplain in the delta area.

 Thassos
For most of the week we hired a Citroen Saxa, which was fine on Thassian roads and up to Dadia, but for a trip into the mountains and for the delta area we exchanged this for a Suzuki Jimny, which was worth the extra €45.
For the remainder of the morning we decided to look for the Nestos Visitor Centre, which is signed from the road to the airport and also from the Keramoti to Chrissoupoli road.
Some birders have claimed that this place no longer exists and at first we felt that this was the case, although on the second visit, a couple of days later, we found the centre easily.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Thassos Greece
We took the ferry to Keramoti from Thassos town on the 13th September planning a 2-day birding trip to the mainland.  The cost for 2 passengers and a small car was 12.30 Euros and is a 40-minute crossing.
There were lots of places around Keramoti and the Nestos Delta River areas that we did not have time to check out also we did no early starts or late evenings.  A really dedicated birding trip in this area would undoubtedly produce a pretty impressive list.
The area known as the “narrows of Nestos” is supposed to be a very good for birding.

Zhelev asked the Bulgarian Parliament to reconsider the agreement which allocated to Greece 29% of the river's annual water capacity for a time period of 35 years.
Zhelev vetoed the agreement by noting that "the problem with the Nestos River waters is thirty- years-old and even the communist governments did not dare to show irresponsibility on this issue.
An agreement regarding the opening of three border crossings and highways linking the two countries, tabled to the Bulgarian Parliament along with the Nestos River waters agreement, has been approved by the Bulgarian President.
