Nestucca Bay Refuge was established in 1991 with the acquisition of short grass pastures to provide wintering habitat for dusky and Aleutian Canada geese.

Shellfish: Ocean beaches and bays north of Tillamook Head opened to razor clamming Oct. 1, because recent testing showed domoic acid levels to be in the safe zone according to the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

COOS BAY RIVER BASIN: The salmon fishery is good in the bay, lower rivers and Isthmus Slough for chinook and hatchery coho.

Netarts Bay is shallow with numerous sandbars that are exposed at low water.
Boats fishing inside the bay should exercise caution on the ebb tide when near the bar, since the strong current can pull a small boat out over the bar and into the surf.
Continual shoaling and shifting of sandbars makes the entrance to Nestucca Bay difficult or impossible to enter, and so it is rarely used.

The Siletz Bay and Nestucca Bay refuges protect areas with especially high value for migrating and wintering waterfowl, shorebirds and anadromous fish as well as habitat used by several threatened and endangered species.
The Cannery Hill headlands overlooking the bay and an area heavily used by Aleutian Canada geese are top priorities in FY 96 for addition to this important refuge in Tillamook County.
Nestucca Bay is the only known wintering area outside of California's Central Valley for the endangered Aleutian Canada goose and one of only two wintering areas on the Oregon coast for the sensitive dusky Canada goose.

March, April and May are the best months on the bay for sturgeon while springers will be congregating in bay as they stage to head upstream with the first good rains of late April or early May. One way or another, one species or the other, just about everyone goes home with a fish.
The emphasis on both the Nestucca and Three Rivers has shifted to native steelies as the bulk of the hatchery run is now in.
Inside the bay, from the jetty mouth upstream, is open for the retention of both chinook and fin-clipped coho.

Historical populations south of the Nestucca River may have been naturally small, but the species was abundant along the north coast and in the lower Columbia River.
Tillamook Bay, Netarts Bay, and the Nestucca River hold the most substantial chum salmon populations in Oregon and are the areas with the longest population monitoring records.
A small Coos Bay population spawns in Marlow Creek, where the habitat for chum salmon is stable and in relatively good condition.

The crew was immediately rescued by the crew of the 47-foot motor lifeboat and taken back to Station Depoe Bay where they were seen by awaiting emergency medical technicians and released.

A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Tillamook Bay, and a beach rescue truck from Station Depoe Bay, Ore., were launched.
Nestucca Fire Rescue arrived at the beach and confirmed that all four people were out of the water and safe.

At Tillamook Bay, this extraordinary catch in 1991 was attributed to large numbers of non-Tillamook Bay coho being caught just inside the mouth of the Bay during late summer (R. Klumph in Ellis 1998:3-8).
In the ocean near the mouth of the Nestucca, hazers reported that "birds" and seals were feeding on smolts (section F-10), and, in the Pacific Northwest, several species of birds can prey on juvenile salmonids in the ocean (Bayer 1989:36-38, Fresh 1997).
