Net Yaroze - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Net Yaroze was only available for purchase by mail order; but Sony also provided it to universities, at least in the UK, in France (Epita) and in Japan.
Contrary to popular belief, the Net Yaroze was neither the only nor the first official consumer console development kit.
The Net Yaroze had no direct successor on the PlayStation 2 platform, but Sony's PS2 Linux for it is similar in its appeal to hobbyists and amateur developers.

Net Yaroze members are expected to come to us with a great variety of skills and experience.
Those individuals would certainly not wish to pay more than they have to for Net Yaroze in order to purchase the development language again or to purchase another one when they have one they are pleased with already.

Black rather than the generic gray of ordinary PS systems, the Net Yaroze PS looks more like a deadly gadget devised by James Bond's equipment man Q than a video game system.
But of course the Net Yaroze PS is more than just a console; it's a device that will give gamers the chance to do what couldn't be done for more than a decade: create their own PS video games.
Net Yaroze is "a hobbyist's program," stressed Molly Smith, SCEA communications manager.

We are now moving into the third dimension on the Net Yaroze (or Playstation development) platform, and this served as an introduction to the subject for us.
As with the previous Net Yaroze code released here, a simple double buffering animation system is used and a fairly extensive group of gamepad input functions are included.
I know that the Net Yaroze program is closed from Sony's point of view, they are not taking new members, but there is quite a bit of support out there from existing members.

The Net Yaroze was an amateur developer kit for the PSX which Sony made and sold between 1996 and 1998.
The Net Yaroze kit included a fl-colored "Yaroze" PSX (SCPH-300x) that was similar to the first run of PSX consoles (SCPH-100x), except that it did not have a territorial lockout.
Unfortunately, the Net Yaroze had one gigantic limitation: Games themselves were limited to 2 MB in size, which was the size of the PSX's memory.

 Yaroze
The Yaroze is basically a Playstation with a PC interface and a bunch of software tools that allows games to be written on the PC (or MAC) and then Loaded into the PlayStation for testing and playing.
Another delaying factor that seems to havehave affected quite a few Yaroze programmers is the limitation the machine places on them only being able to use the PlayStation's internal code libraries, rather than allowing them to make their own.
Well, it seems that a lot of Yaroze owners want to do the same thing and many of them have spent their time working around the limitations that Sony placed on the Yaroze in the design of its programming software.

The Yaroze comes with a version of gcc/as, built to run under DOS/Windows and targetted for a little endian MIPS processor.
The library used for the Yaroze is also supplied in the form of an EXE, 'libps.exe'.
These libraries have several advantages over the Yaroze libs in that they are not only much more powerful, but also are supplied in a form which links properly with your code; this means that any program you write will only have the library functions it uses linked with it - not the whole library.

In terms of 'hacking' the retail psx games the Net Yaroze probably isnt of as much use as using an emulator would be, unless you had the source/debug builds.
They were more aimed at allowing the user to develop and debug stuff with code they have access too, rather than modding an already released game, though I'm sure they'd have some kinda use for that too.
An emulator's debugger would probably be a whole lot more powerful/feature filled these days than compared to the Net Yaroze, as you have control over the entire 'system' and can step thru asm, etc..

There are quite a few PS1 games that started out as Net Yarouze projects, and were later afforded a wider audience, thanks to some fan-developer originality efforts.
