	NetSurf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		NetSurf running on RISC OS NetSurf is an open source web browser for RISC OS and Unix (via GTK+).
		There have been no official releases of NetSurf, although RISC OS test builds are available publicly to download every time a change is made to the source code in Subversion, and development is very active.
		The name NetSurf was agreed upon because it reflects the function of the application.

		NetSurf has been my main browser for some time now, and while it cannot completely replace FireFox without Javascript, it is good to have the speed and aethetics of a native RISC OS application for the very large number of sites which do not have (or are usable without) active content.
		Now I'm sure that NetSurf has been designed with at least the possibility of javascript in mind, so it would not require a ground up re-write as had to occur to many pre-javascript era browsers, but there probably would be significant changes in practice, and a huge amount of additional code written.
		Of course, NetSurf has been designed in a modular fashion, as have been the JavaScript interpreters in existing browsers, but that is not the issue.

		NetSurf has come a long way since it was first conceived in our forums four years ago, but has currently seen no official releases.
		An announcement by Daniel Silverstone on the NetSurf website has confirmed that the "team are working towards releasing version 1.0 of NetSurf for RISC OS".
		Up until now NetSurf has only been available via the command line on Linux for debugging purposes, however those who wish to try out the GTK+ interface will have to compile it themselves because no test builds are available.

		With the continuing improvements of NetSurf, a promising looking port of the Flash player Gnash by NetSurf developer John-Mark Bell and an up-to-date port of a mainstream browser, Firefox, by Peter Naulls, the outlook for the ever important issue of web browsing on RISC OS is beginning to improve.

		I believe that early versions of NetSurf did not respond to the backspace key in this way; presumably it was copied from PC browsers.
		Some time ago I precipitated a rush to access the HSBC site using Netsurf with the consequence that a number of us were locked out of Internet Banking at that site.
