The Estates-General (Staten-Generaal) is the parliament of the Netherlands.
The name was transferred, after the abjuration of the king and the separation of the northern Netherlands from the Spanish dominions, to the representatives elected by the seven sovereign provincial estates for the general government of the United Provinces.
Historically the convocation of the Estates-General consisted of delegates from the provincial estates, and dated from about the middle of the 15th century, under the rule of the dukes of Burgundy in Brussels.

Also, because the highest appellate court in a state is the final authority on that state's constitution, these decisions are not appealable to the more politically conservative United States Supreme Court.
Conversely, in two of the three states where the courts found the marriage statutes were discriminatory, the state legislatures and citizens overrode the decisions by enacting constitutional amendments, limiting marriage to a man and a woman.
Hawaii citizens approved the amendment in the 1998 general election, with nearly seventy percent of the voters favoring the amendment.

New Netherland, the area along the Hudson River and the Delaware River, that was under Dutch control until 1664 and afterwards for a short time until 1674 when it fell definitively in British hands, was formally governed by this States General.
The authority of the States General lay in the area of executing foreign politics, deciding on matters of war and peace, defending the Dutch Republic at sea and on land, and monitoring the Dutch East Indies and West Indies Companies.
In the case of the States General however it is somewhat futile to limit access to the resolutions to providing every resolution with core data such as date, place of origin, and a global indication of the contents.

Incorporated from a number of smaller companies by the States General of the Netherlands in 1602, its monopoly extended from the Cape of Good Hope eastward to the Strait of Magellan, with sovereign rights in whatever territory it might acquire.
It was powerless to resist a British attack on its possessions in 1780, and in 1795 it was doomed by the ouster of the States General at home by the French-controlled Batavian Republic.
During the course of the 60-year war between Spain and the Netherlands (1605-1665), the Dutch company despoiled Portugal, which was united with Spain from 1580 to 1640, of all its East Indian possessions.
