Houses of Cistercian monks: Abbey of Netley | British History Online
The abbey of Netley, Letley (Lœtus Locus), or Edwardstow (Loci Sancti Edwardi), dedicated to the honour of the Blessed Virgin and St. Edward the Confessor, was founded for Cistercian monks by Henry III.
The abbot of Netley was summoned to the parliaments of 1295, 1296, 1300 and 1302.
The abbey of Netley retained most of its early endowments, and at the time of its dissolution the lands belonging to it were, besides the site, the manors of Wellow, Totton, Roydon, Nordley, Gomshall, Kingston Deverel and Hound; and lands and possessions in Southampton, West Setley, Mitcomb Regis, Charleton, Shottishale, Sholinge and Shamelhurst.

 Netley Abbey
Netley Abbey stood, and stands, on a gentle elevation that rises above the bank of Southampton Water, Originally it seems to have been built as a square; but very little is left of the Abbey save the remains of the church, which occupied one of its sides.
Netley was once surrounded by a moat, of which traces are still discernible; and there are two large ponds not far from the buildings, which probably once supplied the brethren with fish; they are deep and full, and overhung by trees and underwood.
Netley has no longer any architectural perfection to boast, but the loveliness of its position is unrivalled - the beautiful trees, the blue water, the distant view out nearly to the Needles, the sea breezes sighing through the trees, will always render its site attractive.

 Netley Abbey
Originally founded in 1239 with a colony of monks from Beaulieu Abbey, the monastery suffered from financial difficulties almost from the outset and, consequently, was always a poor house.
Following the Dissolution, the nave and some of the domestic buildings of the abbey were converted to a luxurious, Tudor mansion and became the home of the Marquess of Winchester.
Although clearly identifiable as an abbey, Netley is a strange combination of medieval, monastic architecture and elaborate, residential Tudor styling.

 Netley Abbey
The Abbey, from which the village got its name, originated when a colony of monks of the Cistercian Order crossed Southampton Water from Beaulieu to establish a new religious house at Netley in 1239.
Founded by Peter des Roche, Bishop of Winchester, and officially named St.Mary of Edwardsto (Sanctae Mariae de Loco Sancti Edwardi), the Abbey was under the patronage of Henry 111, whose name appears on the foundation stone at the base of the north east crossing tower.
Henry V111 granted the site of the Abbey to William Paulet, who converted it into a private residence destroying a lot of the original Abbey structure in the process.
