Netrek's TCP connection setup didn't work very well with this scheme, and of course UDP didn't work at all.
The traditional way to edit the Netrek player list file was to run a program that converted it from a fixed-record-size binary format to ASCII, make the changes, and then convert it from ASCII back to binary.

And Netrek was even used as prior art to convice a stupid patent holder that they shouldn't pursue litigation.
In my opinion, the primary reason why Netrek hasn't grown in the past 5 years is simple: nobody has written a comprehensive tutorial to the game (a useful one that actually answers the correct questions).

It's basically a list of all the Netrek servers - computers that you connect to to play Netrek - online at the moment, with how many people are playing on them, and what type of Netrek variety they're using.
I don't know the addresses for individual Netrek servers, and even if I did, I wouldn't be able to do anything with them because I don't know the command line extensions to automatically connect to a specific server.
I can't download any of the Netrek FAQs, specifically the Netrek Newbie FAQ, or whatever it is. This is because none of the links to the FAQ are working.
