The original browser was once the dominant browser in terms of usage share, but as a result of the first browser war they lost many of their customers to Internet Explorer.
The first beta release versions of the browser were released in 1994 and known as Mosaic and then Mosaic Netscape until a legal challenge from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (makers of NCSA Mosaic), which many of Netscape's founders used to develop, led to the name change to Netscape Navigator.
Netscape 7.0 (based on Mozilla 1.0.1) was released in August 2002 was a direct continuation of Netscape 6 with very similar components.

Netscape Browser was first released on November 30, 2004 as a public "prototype," with several other releases before reaching its first full release as "version 8.0" on May 19, 2005.

The Netscape browser, owned by AOL Time Warner Inc., had held steady with an estimated 13 percent marketshare over the 14-month period leading to the release of IE 6 for Windows about a year ago.
