Netscape Navigator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Netscape Navigator was developed by the team who had created the Mosaic web browser at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
Netscape, according to critics, was more interested in bending the web to its own de facto "standards" (bypassing standards committees and thus marginalizing the commercial competition) than it was in fixing bugs in its products.
Netscape began to experiment with prototypes of a web-based system, known internally as "Constellation", which would allow a user to access and edit his files anywhere across a network no matter what computer or operating system he happened to be using.

Netscape Communications Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Netscape later experimented with prototypes of a web-based system which would allow a user to access and edit his files anywhere across a network, no matter what computer or operating system he happened to be using.
Netscape was not a plaintiff in the case, though its executives were subpoenaed and it contributed much material to the case, including the entire contents of the 'Bad Attitude' internal discussion forum.
Netscape Browser 8's first public beta was originally also scheduled for this date but, due to unfixed bugs, its release was delayed to March 3, 2005.

 AOL's Netscape sues Microsoft | CNET News.com
Netscape, which was acquired by AOL in 1999, is seeking an injunction that could include forcing Microsoft to sell a stripped-down operating system that does not include a browser.
"Netscape's lawsuit is a logical extension of the findings entered by the District Court and unanimously affirmed by the Court of Appeals that Microsoft thwarted competition, violated the antitrust laws, and illegally preserved its monopoly at Netscape's expense," Randall J. Boe, AOL's general counsel, said in a statement.
Netscape is asking for a jury trial and is seeking damages but did not specify an amount in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Netscape, darling of the computer industry, the fastest-growing company in the world, was not invincible.
Netscape's engineering department had lost the single-minded focus we once had, on shipping something useful and doing it fast.
During 1998, Netscape sunk a huge amount of engineering effort into doing the 4.5 release: working on a dead-end proprietary code base, the source of which would never be released to the world, and would never benefit from open source development.

Neither Excite nor Netscape have received any complaints or comments from consumers who believed that a banner advertisement on the Excite or Netscape search results page was a PEI advertisement or was somehow endorsed by, sponsored by or affiliated with PEI.
Excite and Netscape charge their advertisers according to the number of times a banner advertisement is displayed to users, regardless of how many users "click" on the banner ad.
In short, because Excite and Netscape use the words "playboy" and "playmate" as words in the English language rather than as trademarks, 21 and do not use any stylized letters or logo, or in any other way suggest sponsorship or endorsement by PEI, Excite's and Netscape's use of the words is fair use.

 Browser History: Netscape
Within a brief half-year period, many of the original folk from the NCSA Mosaic project were working for Netscape, and a browser was released to the public.
Netscape version 2.0 introduced a bevy of must-have breakthrough features (frames, Java, Javascript and Plug-ins) which helped distance it from the pack, even *with* its attendant price tag.
In January 1998, Netscape made an announcement that their browser would thereafter be free, and also that the development of the browser would move to an open-source process.
