Caves clearly do exist, and so some alternative explanations were proposed, such as the presence of sulphides (Howard, 1964) or the occurrence of mixing corrosion (Bögli, 1964).
This pessimistic view of cave formation appears to be contradicted by the growing evidence from cave exploration and mapping that there are systematic differences between different areas in the depth of flow.
The cave is the longest in the Appalachian Mountains.

Advice for Nettlebed Through Trips   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
SUSS Bull 35(4) recounted the now infamous tale of Camp Nettlebed '96, in which six cavers spent a considerable time contemplating the splendour of Salvation Hall in Nettlebed Cave, New Zealand as revealed by natural lighting.
After any caving incident, it is worthwhile to look at the incident and make some suggestions to minimise the likelihood of the incident recurring.
Note that the average temperature of South Island caves is about 6o C. The party should camp at the Salvation Hall campsite, which an average party experienced in alpine vertical caving but unfamiliar with the cave can expect to reach about 6-8 hours into the trip.
