John Dering Nettleton was a Rhodesian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Nettleton did not give up, however, holding his two remaining bombers on course and dived down towards the factory, bombing it amidst heavy anti aircraft fire.
Nettleton died on July 13, 1943, when he was shot down over the Bay of Biscay.
