NetWare Core Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) is a network protocol used in some products from Novell, Inc. It is usually associated with the NetWare operating system, but parts of it have been ported to other platforms such as Linux, Windows NT and various flavors of Unix.
Novell eDirectory uses NCP for synchronizing data changes between the servers in a directory service tree.

NCP (NetWare Core Protocol) (Linktionary term)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
NCP is the principal protocol for transmitting information between a NetWare server and its clients.
NCP handles login requests and many other types of requests to the file system and the printing system.
NCP services include file access, file locking, security, tracking of resource allocation, event notification, synchronization with other servers, connection and communication, print services and queue management, and network management.

Protocols   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
When multiple protocols are used, the control information for the highest level protocol is placed around the data first, then the control information for each subsequent protocol in the protocol stack is added to the beginning and/or end of the packet.
The NetWare protocols follow the enveloping pattern previously shown in ``Example of multiple protocols in a packet''.
These medium-access protocol implementations are primarily concerned with the transport of packets from one node to another on a single network segment.

NetWare core protocol (NCP)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
NCP makes interaction between clients and file servers possible by defining connection control and service request reply/encoding.
NCP provides its own session control and packet-level error checking instead of relying on other protocols for these functions.
Each NCP request packet submitted on a given connection must be assigned a sequence number by the client.

In contrast, NCP was based on the idea that networks worked perfectly most of the time, so the reply to a request served as the acknowledgement.

NetWare network operating system (NOS) - The network operating system developed by Novell, Inc. The NetWare NOS is loaded on the server when the server is booted; it controls all system resources and the way information is processed on the entire network or internetwork.
A peer-to-peer communication method (or protocol) defines only the basic mechanisms used to transfer data; it need not specify when or why peer application programs or nodes interact or how communication between such applications or nodes should be organized in a distributed environment.
A NetWare router, formerly known as an internal or external bridge, can connect networks that use different network adapters or transmission media as long as both sides of the connection use the same protocols.

The Watchdog (WDOG) protocol provides constant validation of active workstation connections and notifies the NetWare operating system when a connection may be terminated as a result of lengthy periods without communication.

What is NCP? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
NCP, or NetWare Core Protocol is the file-sharing protocol between server and client(s) on a Novell NetWare network.
NCP controls many requests to the file and printing system, along with login requests.
Clients (or workstations) send NCP requests, which are sent via IPX or IP over the network to the server for interpretation.

NetWare's security holes are coming to light due to the efforts of Nomad Mobile Research Centre, or NMRC, in Arlington, Texas.
The organization, which focuses on exposing bugs and holes in networking software, has discovered flaws in the NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) and IPX protocol that let hackers sniff and capture data during a typical user's log-in sequence.
NetWare Core Protocol packet signatures require a 64-bit key that creates "signatures" on each packet coming to the NetWare server from the client.

A Novell NetWare protocol built on top of IPX that speeds up the transfer of multipacket NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) data transfers between a workstation and a server by removing the need to sequence and acknowledge every packet.
For example, ftp (File Transport Protocol), HTML (HyperText Markup Language), and Telnet are all available at preassigned unique port numbers so that the computer knows how to respond when it is contacted on a specific port; Web servers use port 80, and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) e-mail is always delivered to port 25.

NetWare Core Protocol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The process of requesting service from a NetWare server begins in the workstation's RAM where the NetWare DOS Requester or NetWare Requester for OS/2 forms requests according to the definitions of the server's NCP.
Because the NetWare Requester formed the request using the exact guidelines of a specific service protocol, the server handles the request according to the protocol rules, resulting in a proper response.
NetWare Core Protocols exist for every service a station might request from a server.

 Glossary of Terms
IP-SAN (Internet Protocol Storage Area Network) is a general term for several approaches to using IP in a SAN usually over Gigabit Ethernet.
The protocol determines the following: the type of error checking to be used; data compression method, if any; how the sending device will indicate that it has finished sending a message; and how the receiving device will indicate that it has received a message.
A protocol for transferring data between a hard disk drive through the computer's data paths (or bus) to the computer's random access memory (RAM).

 DDJ>Win32 NetWare Core Protocol Revisited
Essentially, NCP is a remote-procedure-call mechanism, allowing a NetWare client program to instruct a NetWare server to execute some fairly complex service routines.
NCP requests and replies are transported inside IPX packets and consist of a header and data area.
NCP is a powerful protocol, since it is simple on the client's side, and leaves the hard work to the server.

 Packet Burst Protocol
The packet burst protocol is built on top of Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) and can speed the transfer of multiple packet NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) file reads and writes.
Packet bursting speeds the transfer of NCP data between a workstation and a NetWare server by eliminating the need to sequence and acknowledge each packet.
By allowing multiple packets to be acknowledged, the burst protocol can reduce network traffic on most IPX networks.

 DDJ>November 1996: Netware Core Protocol
In his article, "Novell's NetWare Core Protocol" (DDJ, November 1993), Pawel Szczerbina also discussed undocumented aspects of NCP, including function/subfunction codes of several NCP requests.
This DLL exports hundreds of NCP function names, using the uniform naming convention NWNCP[s], where is the decimal NCP function code, the decimal subfunction code (if any), and a symbolic short name for the function.
Comparing these exports with Pawel's list, as well as NCP information from Novell's client API help files, has enabled me to compile what is probably the most exhaustive NCP function-code reference publicly available today.
