Network is a 1976 satirical film about a fictional television network named Union Broadcasting System (UBS) and its struggle with poor TV ratings.
When the network news anchor (Howard Beale, played by Peter Finch) finds out he is being fired, he goes on the air announcing it along with his intent to commit suicide during his final broadcast (inspired in part by newscaster Christine Chubbuck's on-air suicide).
The film is a cynical look at the way networks make decisions about programming and the disdain that they show for their audiences.

HBO and Cinemax are the principle models for TMN, though, as with all Canadian broadcasting services, it must comply with Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) imposed licensing criteria, which includes Canadian content quotas.
TMN operates East of the Manitoba/Ontario border, while SuperChannel operates in the West, thus giving them defacto regional monopolies.
As expected, the remaining movie channels began to ask for reduced Canadian content requirements, arguing that programming "control" was necessary to their survival.

In contrast, cable channels doubled their annual number of made-for-TV movies from 1990 to 2000, with four times the number of cable outlets airing original movies last year compared to a decade before, according to the study.
On a network scale, such numbers are chicken feed, but in the lower-profile world of cable TV, they're a fountain of plenty.
And because cable channels often run a movie several times in the same week - TNT airs its movies three times on the same day during a premiere - the cost of production is spread over a larger number of telecasts, and cable outlets can make fewer movies in a year.

Given the media's chokehold on public opinion today, this movie begs to be remade and updated.
