NDIS - Network Driver Interface Specification
Network Driver Interface Specification: Refer to 3COM/Microsoft, LAN Manager: Network Driver Interface Specification, October 8, 1990.
The NDIS specification is used for all communication with network adapters.
The specification was developed by Microsoft and 3Com to provide a common programming interface for MAC drivers and transport drivers.

The drivers are linked to form a stack by connecting, or binding, the upper boundary of one driver to the lower boundary of another driver during the binding portion of driver initialization.
Network packets, or frames, are the data units that are transferred between the MAC and the protocol by the transmit and receive primitives.
The passing of packet data across the interface between the protocol and MAC is accomplished, whenever possible, by exchanging pointers to buffers or to a descriptor that, in turn, points to several data buffers.

The interface provides a protocol manager that accepts requests from the transport layer and activates the network adapter.
Network adapters with compliant network drivers can be freely interchanged.
The interface allows multiple transport protocols to be used with one network adapter.

Drivers written to the interfaces defined here will function concurrently in a system with other networking and protocol drivers, and will operate correctly with the LAN Manager software for DOS and OS/2.
MAC drivers are device drivers that are loaded during system initialization and remain permanently in memory.

NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) is a standard that defines the communication between a network adapter (or, better, the driver that manages it) and the protocol drivers (that implement for example TCP/IP).
The NIC drivers interface directly to the hardware at their lower edge and at their upper edge present an interface to allow upper layers to send packets on the network, to handle interrupts, to reset the NIC, to halt the NIC and to query and set the operational characteristics of the driver.
A typical reason for developing an intermediate driver is to perform media translation between an existing legacy protocol driver and a miniport that manages a NIC for a new media type unknown to the protocol driver.

Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) in Microsoft Windows CE 3.0
All interactions between a NIC driver and protocol drivers, a NIC driver and the operating system, and a NIC driver and the network adapters that it controls are through calls to NDIS functions.
The NIC drivers interface through NDIS to the hardware at the lower edge and to upper layers at the upper edge to send packets, indicate received packets, reset the NIC, halt the NIC, and to query or set the operation characteristics of the driver.
Although the Driver Library is still in the planning stages and the implementation details are not finalized, it will most probably consist of Windows CE Driver software that has been verified and/or tested for the Windows CE operating system by the Microsoft WHQL program.

A Network Interface Card (NIC) is a physical device that acts as a gateway through which data frames are transmitted and received by any machine in a network.
The main reason for using an intermediate protocol driver is for media translation between an existing transport driver and the miniport managing new media type unknown to the transport driver.
All drivers that are written under Windows NT must have a DriverEntry function that acts as an entry point to the driver.

This short description of both the standard NDIS drivers included with Windows and/or a manufactures network adapters, and the modified NDIS drivers included with Observer is meant to provide a background for making a driver and card decision.
Network Instruments has worked with a number of NIC vendors and chip manufacturers to extend the standard NDIS drivers to both collect statistics on the aggregate errors on a LAN segment, but also to move the actual error packet information up the NDIS stack for further examination by Observer’s error displays.
This dual functionality is achieved because the Network Instruments ErrorTrak™ NDIS driver is a highly optimized NDIS driver with the addition of a module to collect and process error packets – these drivers have all the functionality of a standard NDIS driver, plus the ability to pass error packets to Observer.

 NDIS: Network Driver Interface Specification
Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) is a standard API of LAN drivers for "Network Interface Cards" (NIC's) developed by Microsoft.
NDIS also provides a library of functions (sometimes called a "wrapper") abstracting the network hardware from network drivers, that can be used by MAC drivers as well as higher level protocol drivers (such as TCP/IP).
NDIS also maintains state information and parameters for network drivers, including pointers to functions, handles, and parameter blocks for linkage, and other system values.

Network Interface Card Drivers are the software interface between the Network Card Hardware/Firmware and the Network Operating System Data Link layer.
Regardless of the Network Driver type used, all have a network device driver loaded into memory during boot up and a network protocol bound to the network card.
The purpose of the Network Drivers is to decouple the network adapter's device driver from the higher layer protocols.

The writer of a "legacy" driver is free to use whatever functionality is available to develop a device driver.
A writer of a "miniport" driver is required to use a specific set of functions and other rules, dependent on the type of driver being developed.
The driver functions to be performed for each adapter are identical; it is only the adapter "context", including it's hardware resources and instance-specific data, that is different.

TCP Header Checksums Shown as Invalid in Network Monitor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
This behavior occurs because some Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) drivers allow Windows to offload the computation of checksums to the network adapter itself.
Network Monitor installs its filter driver between the NDIS driver for the network adapter and the TCP/IP stack.
This results in captures of packets that are sent from the TCP/IP stack to the network driver being shown as having invalid checksums because they have not been calculated yet.

Network Driver Interface Specification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Network Driver Interface Specification ('''NDIS''') is an application programming interface (API) for Network Interface cards (NICs).
It was jointly developed by Microsoft and 3Com Corporation, and is mostly used in Microsoft Windows on Intel-based computers, but the open-source ndiswrapper project allows many NDIS-compliant NICs to be used with Linux.
Another common LLC is the Open Data-Link Interface (ODI).

 Network Driver Interface Specification
The Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) is a specification for network driver architecture that allows transport protocols such as TCP/IP, Native ATM, IPX, and NetBEUI to communicate with an underlying network adapter or other hardware device.
NDIS permits the high-level protocol components to be independent of the network adapter by providing a standard interface to the network protocols.
Because Windows 2000 network architecture supports NDIS, it requires that network adapter drivers be written to the NDIS specification.
