RFC 2307 (rfc2307) - An Approach for Using LDAP as a Network Information S
Network Working Group L. Howard Request for Comments: 2307 Independent Consultant Category: Experimental March 1998 An Approach for Using LDAP as a Network Information Service Status of this Memo This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community.
For the purposes of this document, the term "nameservice" refers to a service, such as NIS or flat files, that is used by the operating system to resolve entities within a single, local naming context.
Suggested resolution methods The preferred means of directing a client application (one using the shared services of the C library) to use LDAP as its information source for the functions listed in 5.2 is to modify the source code to directly query LDAP.

Network Information Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Network Information Service or NIS is Sun Microsystems' "Yellow Pages" (YP) client-server directory service protocol for distributing system configuration data such as user and host names between computers on a computer network.
As the name "Yellow Pages" is a registered trademark in the United Kingdom of British Telecom PLC for their (paper) commercial telephone directory, Sun changed the name of their system to NIS, though all the commands and functions still start with "yp".
In many environments, directory services like LDAP have come to replace NIS, which is mostly considered to be more modern and secure than NIS, although less efficient.

Network Information Service Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Network Information Service (NIS) is a distributed database that allows you to maintain consistent configuration files throughout your network.
NIS maintains consistent system information throughout the domain by designating one system, the master server, as the sole source of information.
To ensure that the system information is consistent at the slave servers, and therefore throughout the whole domain, you should make all updates to the maps at the master server.

Solaris ONC+ - Network Information Service Plus(NIS+): An Enterprise Naming Service
Network Information Service Plus (NIS+), a component of ONC+ in SunSoft's Solaris 2.0 and beyond, is an enterprise naming service designed to replace the widely-installed ONC Network Information Service (NIS) in customer environments.
The overall reliability of the network is enhanced when there are multiple master servers across the network, one for each domain, as opposed to a single master for an NIS network.
NIS+ is similar to CDS in that both services are designed to address the naming and resource location requirements of higher-level network entities such as users, systems and network services within enterprise networks.

Introducing the Network Information Service for Linux
As networks of computers grow, it is increasingly important to share common system information between them to present a unified appearance to the computer user.
The Network Information Service (NIS) is a system originally invented by Sun Microsystems for distributing shared configuration files seamlessly across a network.
The main objective is to get domainname to run ``early'' in the boot process, before other network services that might depend on NIS run, but after the network hardware is initialized and the IP address information is set.

Abstract: Introduction This note is a study of the security weaknesses present in a widely used Unix network protocol, Network Information Service (NIS).
NIS (formerly known as Yellow Pages or YP) was developed by Sun Microsystems primarily to reduce the effort required to setup and maintain a network of Unix workstations.
Sun s NIS is used in a network of hosts in order to manage and 16 distribute system maps, like host names and user passwords.

Each domain maintains all map information on the master NIS server and then makes the information available to the other machines within the domain through a client-server relationship.
For example, the NIS master converts the information from the group file into two different maps: one that looks up a group according to name, and one that looks it up according to Group Identification Number (GID).
The NFS Services for NetWare 5 uses this information to allow access to the services as well as to grant permissions to specific files and directories.

More than 70 percent of Americans are in support of a nationwide health-information exchange or network for doctors and patients, according to a recent survey by the Markle Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based foundation that encourages the use of technology in the areas of health care and national security.
The principles came about from work with consumer and patient organizations and have been reviewed by 44 organizations that represent consumers, privacy advocates, medical professionals, federal officials, the research community and others with a stake in the health IT area.
Independent bodies, accountable to the public, should oversee local and nationwide electronic health-data exchanges as no single stakeholder group should dominate the oversight bodies, and consumer representatives selected by their peers should participate as full voting members.
