Network Interface Cards are what allow your system to talk to the network.
All hme interfaces are 10/100 Mbps, all le interfaces are 10 Mbps, all qe interface are quad 10 Mbps, and qfe interfaces are quad 10/100 Mbps.
If an interface is not responding to the network, check to be sure it is the correct IP address and netmask.

 NIC - Network Interface Cards
A network cable plugs into a socket in the network card.
Now that networks are in wide use, many computer companies are integrating NIC's into their computers and no additional card is needed.
NIC's are rated on their maximum rate of data transfer which is measure in Mbps.

Network Interface Card   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A network interface card is used to connect a computer to an Ethernet network.
This may be either using an external transceiver (as shown) or through an internal integrated transceiver mounted on the network interface card PCB.
Each network interface card is assigned an Ethernet source address by the manufacturer of the network interface card (this is normally stored in a PROM on the network interface card).

With the ever-increasing speeds of network links, e.g., HiPPI-6400 at 6.4 Gb/s and DWDM at O(Tb/s), and with processor speeds doubling every 18 months, the networking endpoints, i.e., the path between the network and the processor, will continue to be a bottleneck in the years to come.
Designing a NIC to be accessed like memory rather than as a peripheral device allows application programmers to focus on parallelizing programs (by hiding the details of managing parallelism and data locality from the programmer) rather than burdening them with managing explicit data movement into and out of a computing node.

Each computer that is attached to a network requires a network interface card or chip.
An interface card takes data from a PC, converts it into data "frames" that are broadcast onto the network, and sends it to another interface card.

network interface card - a Whatis.com definition - see also: NIC
A network interface card (NIC) is a computer circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network.
Personal computers and workstations on a local area network (LAN) typically contain a network interface card specifically designed for the LAN transmission technology, such as Ethernet or Token Ring.
Network interface cards provide a dedicated, full-time connection to a network.

IPM - Network Interface Cards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A computer needs a network interface card - a NIC - to connect to a network.
NICs are rated according to their speed: 10Mbps, 100Mbps or 'Gigabit' 1000MBps.
For a NIC to work at its maximum speed, all the other network devices between it and the server must also be able to operate at the same speed.

Regardless of the Network Driver type used, all have a network device driver loaded into memory during boot up (and a network protocol bound to the network card).
The purpose of the Network Drivers is to decouple the network adapter's device driver from the higher layer protocols.
The packet drivers are assigned software interrupts to the network interface card during the bootup process (usually in the autoexec.bat file).

The strategy of the SmartNIC movement is deviously simple: Locate a network function consuming vast quantities of server resources and build a system that intercepts this traffic transparently and off-loads it to a processor resident on the NIC.
Its job is to handle some of the network tasks that otherwise would be pushed up to the server processor.

 Setting Up Network Interface Cards
Before you begin, you should know the model of the card you have, the chip it uses, and whether it is a PCI or ISA card.
Not all NIC drivers are available as modules; notable examples of devices for which modules do not exist are ISA cards.
Check the network card and the motherboard documentation to determine if that may be the problem.

Building Firewalls with Intelligent Network Interface Cards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The primary method for protecting networks today is to use a firewall: a boundary separating the protected network from the untrusted Internet.
Distributing a firewall to each network host avoids many of these problems, but weakens the security guarantees of the network since it places the firewall under the control of the host OS.
We describe the architecture of a Network Interface Card-based distributed firewall and our implementation, which uses an i960-based NIC and IPsec for management and policy distribution.
