Network Mapping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Network mapping or Internet Mapping is the study of the physical connectivity of the Internet.
The maps produced by this project were based on the layer 3 or IP level connectivity of the Internet (see OSI model), but there are different aspects of internet structure that have also been mapped.
Some projects have attempted to incorporate geographical data into their internet maps (for example, to draw locations of routers and nodes on a map of the world), but some projects are only concerned with representing the more abstract structures of the internet.

 Network Mapping Introduction from OPENXTRA
Networks are complex systems, and they are getting more complex all of the time.
One of the downsides to network mapping is that the maps require an investment of time to create.
Not only will your network maps communicate to you what changes are necessary, but they will also communicate to other people too.

 Organizational Mapping: Knowing the Pitfalls
Social network maps can be used to discover gaps in connectivity among people in the organization and sources of untapped knowledge.
In truth the map is the middle part of the process and serves only as the beginning for analysis, the true output.
Then the map becomes a measure of how close to the ideal you already are in order to benchmark for future measures of how much change you have been able to effect.

 Network Mapping: Software Possibilities
It is neither required nor desirable that the map should be constrained by some equivalent to "topographic" constraints (namely the position of the stations should not be determined by some form of geographic coordinates).
The advantage of this approach is that it endeavours to mirror the network on the basis of its internal characteristics.
More seriously, such networks when mapped result in maps which, although they reflect the data, are not designed to enhance the comprehensibility of the data (other than in a purely scientific sense).

The Urban Institute | Reentry Mapping Network   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Launched through the support of a planning grant provided by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Reentry Mapping Network is a partnership among community-based organizations and the Urban Institute designed to create community change through the mapping and analysis of neighborhood-level data related to reentry and community well being.
Following the successful model of the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP), RMN partners use mapping to pinpoint neighborhoods that experience high concentrations of returning prisoners and examine the extent to which such communities are equipped to address the challenges that prisoner reentry creates.
Network partners then use the analytical findings from data that they collect to help mobilize community members and leaders to devise targeted responses to effectively address reentry-related problems.

Entopia Social Network Mapping is unique in that it is not based on a static view of knowledge within the enterprise, but rather the dynamic usage of content.
In addition, because Entopia’s social network maps are dynamically generated at the time of each search based on a single topic, there is no aggregation of information about the system’s users.

Nomad is a network mapping program designed to automatically discover a local network, using SNMP to identify network devices and work out how they are physically connected together.
Changes in the network are reflected in the diagram which continuously updates, and you can customise your own views of the network map with various views and filters.
Manipulating the network map to show and hide parts of the diagram has been greatly improved, this includes representing networks as a bus or point to point link and other simple graphical representations.

For large enterprises that have the luxury of in-house resources, mapping the network means sending technicians off to remote locations to inventory routers and switches, determine installed versions of router software and check configurations—all of which incur travel costs and lost productivity at the home office.
Smaller organizations, even though their networks are less complex than those at large companies, could be forced to call in contractors at $125 to $200 per hour.

To help discover the network topology the program sends out "hop limited probes" in an imitation of the traceroute program.
The heuristic map it generates is not necessarily accurate, but then again, it is impossible to accurately map a network with hop limited probes since network topology is dynamic.
The program's functionality could actually have been reproduced with a wrapper to many versions of the traceroute program that is out there (namely the ability to set first and maximum hop), but the libnet and libpcap libraries were used.

Route Explorer, Route Dynamics take new network mapping path | InfoWorld | Review | 2003-11-07 | By Dan Morton
Creating a dynamic network map is a good solution, but most devices that gather that data ignore the one device that can tell them everything: routers.
Traditional network monitoring packages treat the network as a group of devices that happen to be interconnected.
After configuring Route Explorer’s initial network via the LCD on the 2U appliance, the rest of the setup and admin tasks, such as user management, Ethernet interface configuration, and route database administration, are done via a Web interface.

Wireless network mapping could pose enterprise risk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The threat posed by warchalking, however, goes far beyond what might be considered isolated incidents of scanning for the presence of wireless networks.
For example, a Web site called Zhrodague Wireless Maps (ZWM) allows war drivers - those who go around looking for wireless networks - to submit output from their war-driving adventures and then creates digital street-level maps that show the location and signal strength of 802.11b access points.
But William Harrod, director of the Investigative Response Division at TruSecure and a 14-year veteran of the FBI, downplayed the security significance of warchalking, saying that terrorists or serious criminals are unlikely to rely on it for identifying access points.
