ONLamp.com -- Archiving PF Firewall Logs
Some larger networks connecting computers at more than one physical location, though within the same organization often send logs to one central location for analysis, but still keep the copies of logs archived on-site as a security precaution.
For the sake of simplicity we'll use a network split into two segments: private network and DMZ (Figure 1), both protected by the same firewall, which will automatically collect and send logs to one of the workstations connected to the internal private network segment.
If our firewall is set up to log all traffic going in and out of the private segments and the DMZ segment, then sending the logs to the workstation connected to the internal private segment of your network (Figure 1) more than doubles the amount of data transferred in that segment.

What Is A Network Segment? - Computer Networks
A network segment can be somewhat different depending on the topology of the network.
The easiest way to understand the concept is with bus networks because it is basically the same for all topologies.
A segment is simply a single length of network cable that extends to all nodes connected within that segment.

Network Analyzer and Packet Sniffer - CommView
And there is an important economic reason behind using a network analyzer: it costs a fraction of the price of information, time, software, and hardware that may potentially be lost or wasted by not using a network analyzer.
Being a network analyzer (also commonly referred to as a packet analyzer, network monitor, or packet sniffer), it captures and decodes network traffic and makes sense of it, allowing you to see what, where, and how information leaves and enters your computer -- which is critically important for a secure Internet experience.
Be sure to read our white paper, Promiscuous Monitoring in Ethernet and Wi-Fi Networks, that examines the problems related to the deployment and usage of software-based network monitoring solutions in wired and wireless LANs.

 WhatsUp Gold User's Guide v8.0 - Creating a Subnet
If you already have a parent network map, you can create a second network map for a particular network segment and then link it to the parent map; this makes the second map a "subnet" of the parent map.
When a device or service goes down in a subnet map, the subnet icon on the parent map changes color to indicate that there's a problem in the subnet.
The subnet icon in the parent network map will have the color of the highest priority alarm that occurs in the subnet map.

Network Traffic Monitor and Meter - CommTraffic
CommTraffic is a network traffic monitor that collects, processes, and displays traffic and network utilization statistics for computer network connections, both LAN and dial-up.
When monitoring a LAN segment, CommTraffic shows traffic and network utilization statistics for each computer in the segment.
Without it, you would only be able to monitor the network traffic in your LAN segment.
