Network society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Network Society was coined by Jan van Dijk in his Dutch book 'De Netwerkmaatschappij' (1991) -translation: 'The Network Society' (1999, 2006)- and by Manuel Castells in the first part of his trilogy 'The Information Age' (1996).
In 1978 James Martin used the related term 'The Wired Society' indicating a society that is connected by mass- and telecommunication networks.
Van Dijk defines the network society as a society in which a combination of social and media networks shapes its prime mode of organization and most important structures at all levels (individual, organizational and societal).

 The Chronicle - Manuel Castells
This network logic or form of organization induces a social determination at a higher level, one that was unknown before.
Castells is treating networks on a higher level of abstraction (the structure per se) and social reality (mainly the macro-sphere) than the classical empirical network approach which deals with single individuals linked in dyads and cliques and being stars or isolates..
According to the author the 'logic' of the network society is pervading all spheres of social, economic and cultural life.

In the Network Society a fundamental form of social domination is the prevalence of the logic of the space of flows over the space of places and induces a metropolitan dualism and a form of social/territorial exclusion which bypasses and marginalises people and places.
Cosmopolitan democracy is needed to regulate the network society and the network state.
Network Society opens up a new realm of contradictions and conflicts as people around the world refuse to become shadows of global flows and begin to project their dreams, and sometimes their nightmares into the light of new history making.

Conversation with Manuel Castells, p. 5 of 6
I started from the technology side, the network side, and then I found that part of the story about the transformation of power did not correspond to that logic, but to the logic of resisting the domination of values implemented through these very effective networks and trying to provide alternative meaning.
Looking at what happens on the ground, seeing that the reaction to these networks can be a reassertion or a redefinition of identity, helps you understand the complexity of what's actually going on in the world.
In a so-called information society, minds are not only the most important economic asset -- companies with minds make money; companies with money and no minds lose the money -- it's the same thing in everything.

The first of two trends important in understanding the Network Society is a worldwide crisis of political legitimacy, caused by a lack of trust in the political class.
This has made society more binary, as is the nature of digital information; you are either in or you are out of a network, with very little scope for ambiguity.
The question I think he was posing is, for instance, whether the Network Society is more efficient and achieving its goals, and so the power at the centre of the network is augmented (alternatively, due to easier networking does decision making become less centralised?).
