Neumark passed the time happily in the Henning home until he had saved enough to proceed to Königsberg, where he enrolled June 21, 1643, as a law student.

In September 1653 Neumark was admitted as a member of the Fruitbearing Society, of which he became secretary in 1656.

Neumark, 45, is a faculty senior scientist at Berkeley Lab and a professor of chemistry at UC Berkeley.
Neumark grew up in Chicago and remembers being attracted to science as a child but only choosing to make a career of chemistry after being inspired by high school teacher Frank Cardulla, who recently won the American Chemical Society's James Bryant Conant Award as the best high school chemistry teacher in the country.
Neumark says an immediate problem is that "we are faced with the loss of good people" like Brad Moore, "and one of my priorities is to make constructive use of these losses" by seeking replacements who can best contribute to the division.

Neumark and his colleagues have found an alternative structure in which the hydrated electron may be bound to the surface of the cluster.
In this latest effort, Neumark and his colleagues were able to characterize an entirely new class of cluster anions with vertical binding energies (the energy required to remove an electron from its orbit) that were significantly lower than any previously recorded.
From their findings, Neumark and his colleagues conclude that an anion water cluster needs to consist of at least 11-25 molecules in order to be able to have distinguishable internally solvated or surface state structures.

Neumark visited homes and walked the streets to meet the church's neighbors; talked with community leaders, shopkeepers, and street-corner misfits; recruited neighborhood kids and promising artists into an art class that became the cornerstone of an after-school program; initiated Sunday school classes; and sought to heal racial and class divisions that had festered for decades.

Research News: Hydrated Electrons Can Take More Than One Guise
Experiments led by Daniel Neumark, director of Berkeley Lab's Chemical Sciences Division, have identified two distinct forms of negatively charged water clusters, thereby providing new insight into the fundamentally important interaction between electrons and water.
Daniel Neumark is director of the Chemical Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Neumark and his colleagues created clusters of water anions by passing argon gas over molecules of water and heavy water at temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius, introducing the gas mixture into vacuum, and generating negatively charged clusters through the interaction of the gas mixture with low energy electrons.

Research News: New Insights into Hydrated Electrons Will Aid Biologists, Chemists
By observing how a single electron behaves amid a cluster of water molecules, a team of scientists has gained a better understanding of a fundamental process that drives a myriad of biological and chemical phenomena, such as the formation of reactive molecules in the body that can cause disease.
The simple fact that they exist is interesting, as is their little understood role in many biological and chemical processes.
Although it is too early to tell how Neumark’s work will elucidate the behavior of hydrated electrons in the real world, such as how they conspire to form free radicals (highly reactive molecules that can damage tissue and contribute to diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and heart disease), it will help shape future research.
