Neupogen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Neupogen is similar to a naturally occurring protein which stimulates the colonies of white stem cells within the bone marrow causing the level of neutrophils in the blood to rise (Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor - GCSF).
Neupogen is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous) containing 30 or 48 million units of filgrastim in a pre-filled syringe.
Neupogen is generally well tolerated and it is often difficult to separate the mild side effects from those caused by the chemotherapy.

Filgrastim (trade name Neupogen®), is a drug that was approved for use by the FDA in 1991 for cancer patients with bone marrow damage due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Neupogen may also be useful for patients who have bone marrow damage from accidental exposures to high doses of radiation and it is expected to provide similar benefits.

 Data Sheet
Treatment with Neupogen in patients undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy or myeloablative therapy followed by bone marrow transplantation leads to a significant reduction in the incidence, severity and duration of neutropenia and febrile neutropenia, and consequently, fewer admissions to the hospital, shorter duration of hospitalisation and less antibiotics as compared to patients on cytotoxic chemotherapy alone.
Neupogen is indicated for the mobilisation of autologous peripheral blood progenitor cells alone, or following myelosuppressive chemotherapy and the mobilisation of peripheral blood progenitor cells in normal donors (allogeneic PBPC).
Neupogen should not be administered to patients with known hypersensitivity to filgrastim or to any of the excipients.

Neupogen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Neupogen is an injectable prescription treatment that stimulates the bone marrow to make more infection-fighting white blood cells called neutrophils—exactly as your own body does when you're healthy.
Neupogen does not eliminate the risk of infection entirely, but it does minimize your risk, day by day.
Once your doctor has prescribed Neupogen, continuing Neupogen throughout your chemotherapy will help guard against future infections, as patients experiencing low white blood cell counts after one cycle are more likely to experience low counts with future cycles.
