In vertebrate animals, the routes that the myriad nerves take from the brain to the rest of the body (or "periphery") and the internal structure of the brain in particular are both extremely elaborate.
Cellular neuroanatomy is the anatomy of neurons and glia, including the branching of dendrites and the detailed structure of synapses.
It is studied with the techniques of histology and microscopy, often in concert with genetic engineering, which maybe used to "tag" specific proteins.

 Computational Neuroanatomy Review
The computational approach to neuroanatomy is just at its beginning, but has a great potential to enhance the intuition of investigators and to aid neuroscience education.
A second important reason the computational approach could contribute to the progress in neuroanatomy is that direct visual observation and manipulation of 3-D structures in a graphic display or in virtual reality helps the development of novel intuitions among researchers and basic understanding among students.
Neuroanatomy is in a strikingly contrasting situation, with a century of quantitative data accumulated and little or little modeling effort to summarize and rationalize them.

 Alibris: Neuroanatomy
Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases brings a pioneering, interactive approach to the teaching of neuroanatomy.
This book traces the seminal ideas that emerged in the first half of the nineteenth century, when the fundamental concepts of modern neurophysiology and anatomy were formulated in a period of unprecedented scientific discovery.
Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy Evolution and Adaptation Second Edition Ann B. Butler and William Hodos The Second Edition of this landmark text presents a broad survey of comparative vertebrate neuroanatomy at the introductory level, representing a unique contribution to the field of evolutionary neurobiology.

Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases seems a slam-dunk into the classics shelf.
Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases brings a pioneering interactive approach to the teaching of neuroanatomy, using over 100 actual Clinical Cases and high-quality radiologic images to bring the subject to life.
This approach allows students to appreciate the clinical relevance of structural details as they are being learned, and to integrate knowledge of disparate functional systems, since a single lesion may affect several different neural structures and pathways.

This book has all the neuroanatomy and associated clinical scenarios that I was tested on for Step 1.
High Yield neuroanatomy is written in a superbly comprehensive way (a lot to ask for from a science such as neuroanatomy) and with a lot of helpful illustrations that help to consolidate written concepts.
Neuroanatomy is a tough subject that cannot be crammed.

 Ann B. Butler
Current projects include neuroanatomical tract-tracing studies on visual and olfactory pathways and pallial circuitry in fish, histochemical studies to identify comparable limbic areas across different species of fish, theoretical aspects of homology in comparative biology, and collaborative work on the evolution of pallial areas in amniotes, including mammalian neocortex, involving comparative embryological development.
The author (with Dr. William Hodos) of Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy, she has published over 50 articles in books, encyclopedias, and peer-reviewed journals such as Brain, Behavior and Evolution, Brain Research, and the Journal of Comparative Neurology.

 CNB 521 Human Neuroanatomy
The course consists of lectures in neuroanatomy and basic neurophysiology, plus two hour laboratory sessions that complement the majority of the lectures.
Neuroanatomy actively involves the integration of structural with physiological and biochemical concepts, as well as correlations with selected clinical cases.
In addition, within the neuroanatomy classes themselves, functional, neurochemical, or clinical correlations are frequently made.

It took us through all the course objectives in a logical manner, and the explanations and case studies provided good examples in preparing for exams.
As a resident,I took me less than a month going through the major chapters in the book, where I felt comfortable dealing with the cases, with a clear concept of localization. In genereal, I think it is a must for meds student and junior residents.
This was a great source, not as a formal neuroanatomy text, but for an understanding of clinical cases.

This new edition presents the essentials of human neuroanatomy is a concise, tightly outlined, well-illustrated format.
The neuroanatomy course at my school was very unorganized and poorly taught and our required textbook was way too verbose to be helpful.
This book is very well organized and very thorough for a review book- you really don't even need a textbook, just a neuroanatomy atlas.
