  Neuroinformatics Doctoral Training Centre
The Neuroinformatics DTC covers the areas of computational neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, neuromorphic and neural engineering, and software systems for these studies, such as simulation, modelling, visualisation, databasing and data analysis.
In tandem with this concentrated mass of research students, Edinburgh is continuing to expanded its faculty in the area of Neuroinformatics.
Existing academic groupings are reorganising and expanding in Neuroinformatics areas, and we have many partner labs in the UK, EU and USA.

 Neuroinformatics Core
The Neuroinformatics Core is designing and operating such databases, and developing novel methods to improve the usefulness and integration of the data for provide such databases and access to all investigators.
Also, the Neuroinformatics core provides services and does research in computational neurobiology, developing new techniques and applying them to systems modeling which integrates data from the molecular to the behavioral levels.
A second strength of the Neuroinformatics core is the use of information extraction and information retrieval systems from the relevant biomedical literature to provide context for the often overwhelming results of high throughput studies.

The 2005 Edinburgh Summer School in Neuroinformatics Simulation Tools will be held on the 22nd - 26th of August.
Neuroinformatics is an exciting new collaboration between informatics experts and neuroscientists to try to understand the workings of nervous systems.
This course will give a practical introduction into how to use modelling and simulation tools, how to decide on an appropriate level of abstraction when modelling, and how to extend the simulation tools when they do not quite cover your research interest.

A global program in Neuroinformatics is about to start, as being initiated by the OECD Global Science Forum, for the realization of a global facility for the exchange of neuroscience data, analysis and modeling tools.

Genesis of the project: The recommendation to coordinate international efforts in the new field of Neuroinformatics was first made in the report on Bioinformatics elaborated under the aegis of the then OECD Megascience Forum in 1998.
Following extensive discussions in the Neuroinformatics Working Group of the Global Science Forum chaired by Dr Stephen Koslow, the proposal to create an International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility, as well as a funding Programme in International Neuroinformatics (PIN), was then presented in 2002.
To rise to this challenge of integration, and to ensure efficient and maximum use of these data, it is now necessary to develop and create these shared resources: (i) neuroscience data and knowledge databases; (ii) analytical and modelling tools; and (iii) computational models.
