Historical Note - Neuropathology at MGH   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Neuropathology is, in itself, a field of great fascination and it is probably going to continue that people will become attracted to the discipline and want to devote their careers to basic aspects of nervous system disorders.
17.The Neuropathology Division of the Max Planck lnstitute for Brain Research (Edinger Institute for Neurology) in Frankfurt, Germany, was headed by the late Dr. Wilhelm Krucke (1911-1989) After his retirement, the division was taken over by the University of Frankfurt, and is presently directed by Dr. Woligang Schlote, Editor of Clinical Neuropathology.
Neuropathology residents were responsible for their own cases, i.e., where the major disease had been in the nervous system.

The division serves as a consultation center for Arkansas and the neighboring states for surgical and autopsy neuropathology, including performance of autopsies on patients with documented or suspected neurological diseases, and interpretation of diagnostic muscles biopsies.
Residents of the Department of Pathology are continually exposed to diagnostic neuropathology throughout their anatomic pathology and autopsy rotations, and this is enhanced by a focused upper-level neuropathology rotation.
Neuropathology lectures for the second year medical students are given in spring semester.

During the first-year experience in neuropathology, the residents have primary responsibility for analyzing and describing the peripheral neuromuscular and central nervous systems in conjunction with general evaluation of their autopsy cases.
Under the guidance of the fulltime neuropathology trainees and the direct supervision of neuropathology faculty, residents taking a formal neuropathology rotation have responsibility for diagnoses of brain lesions.
In addition, the anatomic resident on this senior rotation attends the neurosurgical clinicopathologic conference and surgical neuropathology slide conferences and studies the extensive neuropathology teaching slide sets with the guidance of neuropathology faculty.

 Neuropathology
The neuropathology of the human prion diseases (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS) and kuru is characterised by 4 features: spongiform change, neuronal loss, astrocytosis and amyloid plaque formation.
These features are shared with prion diseases in animals, and the recognition of these similarities prompted the first attempts to transmit a human prion disease (kuru) to a primate in 1966, followed by CJD in 1968 and GSS in 1981.
The subsequent demonstration that human prion diseases were transmissible reinforced the importance of spongiform change as a diagnostic feature, reflected in the use of the term `spongiform encephalopathy' for this group of disorders.
