Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health: Neurophysiology
Neurophysiology is a broad field of study because many different levels are involved in the overall functioning of the nervous system and its components.
The neurophysiology of the CNS studies the function of the brain and spinal cord while that of the PNS studies the function of all the nerves that connect the CNS with organs, muscles, blood vessels and glands.
Neurophysiology is also the study of the physiology, structure and function of nerve cells, or neurons, meaning how individual neurons receive and transmit information using chemical and electrical signals.

Neurophysiology technologists must be practical, methodical and able to work with a wide variety of clients.
Neurophysiology technologists usually work in a hospital neurophysiology department or a laboratory with electrically screened rooms (rooms protected from static electricity and power surges) that have been set up to perform specific tests.
Neurophysiology technologists use the same basic techniques as they did in the past, and their role is not expected to change in the near future.

 Clinical Neurophysiology
In US and in many European countries the EMG and EEG laboratories often are linked to neurology or physical medicine and rehabilitation and the laboratories are run by doctors with clinical responsibilities.
However, in the Scandinavian countries and Great Britain, the departments of clinical neurophysiology are usually independent laboratores run by specialists in CN.
Within neurophysiology there is continous development of new sophisticated methods for understanding of pathophysiologic mechanisms.
