Psychological testing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the test is completed, the results can be compiled and compared to the responses of a norm group usually comprised of people at the same age or grade level as the person being evaluated.
Of course, individually-administered tests are more expensive to administer because of the need for a trained administrator (psychologist, school psychologist, or psychometrician), and the limitation of working with just one client at a time.
Neuropsychological tests are specifically designed tasks used to measure a psychological function known to be linked to a particular brain structure or pathway.

Neuropsychological test - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neuropsychological tests are typically administered to a single person working with an examiner in a quiet office environment, free from distractions.
Neuropsychological tests are a core component of the process of conducting neuropsychological assessment.
In this model, a person's raw score on a test is compared to a large general population normative sample, that should ideally be drawn from a comparable population to the person being examined.

 Neuropsych Tests
Some tests are included here that are not, strictly speaking, neuropsychological tests, but that may be used in a comprehensive examination.
Tests that require intense attention to a visual-motor task are used in assessing sustained attention and freedom from distractibility.
This personnel test is not a neuropsychological instrument per se, but is used to help evaluate vocational abilities and potential for comparison with other neuropsychological tests in making practical prognostic decisions.

Tests of sensory and motor function are tested to varying degrees depending both upon the patient population and the biases of the examiner.
In addition, normal neuropsychological testing reassures elderly patients who are concerned that they may be developing Alzheimer's disease, and neuropsychological testing may be considered for certain cases in which cognitive decline is not suspected strictly to provide patient reassurance.
Tests such as the Wechsler intelligence scales, Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised, Memory Assessment Scale, and Achievement tests have undergone formal standardization and have normative tables that are reliable and generally reflect the population at large.

Development and assessment of a neuropsychological battery to aid in predicting driving performance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Our neuropsychological test battery was based on the results of a questionnaire that was sent to 292 neuropsychologists asking them to rate which neuropsychological tests would best assess driving-related skills.
They were asked to rank the list of neuropsychological tests from one to five, where a score of one would be used to label the least discriminating test in terms of identifying problem drivers, and a five would be used to label the most discriminating test.
We chose the neuropsychological tests that were used in Phase 2 of the present study based on the survey results, and conferences with a neuropsychologist, a neurologist, and a psychologist, who are all authors of the present study.

Tests are used that assess the entire cortex in addition to equal presentation of the measurement of both hemispheres.
Tests employed to measure damage to the brain must have an established base rate to determine whether the use of a particular test or sign increases or decreases diagnostic or predictive accuracy.
Tests need to demonstrate incremental validity, that is, there is a gain in the level/degree of accuracy of diagnosis with the addition of a particular test.

17-40% of HCV-Infected Report Impaired Psych Function in HIV+
The percentage of impaired performance on the neuropsychological measures was compared against the percentage expected in the normal population as reported by Heaton et al.
To characterize the degree of neuropsychological impairment further for both groups we calculated that 27% of the HCV-alone group and 13.8% of the HCV/HIV-co-infected group was impaired on two or more of the neuropsychological tests.
We tested a relatively small group of patients, and therefore we may be underpowered with respect to finding subtle neuropsychological differences between the two relatively healthy clinical samples.

Neuropsychological Approaches for the Detection and Evaluation of Toxic Symptoms
Tests applied to evaluate symptoms among humans derive from two different psychological approaches: traditional neuropsychological testing to diagnose brain dysfunction and experimental cognitive psychology.
Sensory tests are not as plentiful and have not received as much emphasis in the literature on neurotoxicants as many of the tests of cognition and memory.
While some tests appear to be more sensitive than others, it is difficult to develop a clear picture due to the large variability in the demographic profiles of the subject groups evaluated, the range of different substances to which these groups were exposed, and the lack of clarity regarding duration and intensity of exposures.

Second, should a test become invalidated through exposure to the public domain, redevelopment of a replacement is a costly and time consuming endeavor (note: restandardization of the most widely-used measures of intelligence and memory, the WAIS-III and WMS-III, cost several million dollars, took over five years to complete, and required testing of over 5000 cases).
Invalidation of tests through public exposure, and the prospect that efforts to develop replacements may fail or, even if successful, might themselves have to be replaced before too long, could serve as a major disincentive to prospective test developers and publishers, and greatly inhibit new scientific and clinical advances.
If a request to release test data or a recorded examination places the psychologist or neuropsychologist in possible conflict with ethical principles and directives, the professional should take reasonable steps to maintain test security and thereby fulfill his or her professional obligations.

Description: The Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery (HRNB) was developed to predict the presence of brain damage while offering a comprehensive view of a patient’s individual functions.
The purpose of this battery is to provide the clinician with a database for inferring the nature, location, and extent of the structural changes in the brain that may underlie and explain the pattern of intact and impaired functions derived from the measures and qualitative information yielded by the battery.
The present battery consists of 10 tests which have been shown empirically to best discriminate between normals and patients with documented cortical damage.

Tests showing the largest group differences included: Trial Making B (24%) and A (13%), and errors on the Benton Visual Retention Test (25%).
CONCLUSIONS: Although the overall neurological status was not significantly different in the groups treated and untreated with AZT, the NASG neuropsychological test battery demonstrated significantly better performance in the treated group.

Although inclusion of explicit measures of task motivation and test validity should be included in all neuropsychological assessments, it is particularly true when a strong financial incentive to perform poorly on neuropsychological tasks exists.
Variability also exists in how certain neuropsychological tests are administered, and this will also effect how comparable the selected norms are.

This is done by assuring the patient that you are concerned for their welfare and that your report will accurately reflect the information they have given you, as well as the neuropsychological assessment performance.
The neuropsychological test battery you employ should be comprehensive, and should utilize, whenever possible, traditional test procedures for which there are appropriate norms.
Groups of tests to be included are: academic achievement measures, Wechsler Intelligence Scales, a standard neuropsychological test batter such s the Halstead-Reitan (when there are forensic issues), additional tests of learning and memory, attention and concentration, and executive functioning, and some assessment of psychopathology/personality (MMPI-2, Rorschach, MMI, etc).

Willmes remarks that "In aphasia testing is often useful to require a more differentiated item scoring, expressing different degrees of deviation from a correct solution." He then gives an example of the application of Masters' partial credit model to the "reading aloud" section of the Written Language subtest of the Aachen Aphasia Test (AAT).
He concludes his discussion by noting that the Rasch approach facilitates large scale studies of aphasia, because person fit statistics reduce the clinical diagnostic effort by verifying that each of the subjects do indeed exhibit the same pattern of symptoms.
