  MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Neurosyphilis
Neurosyphilis is a slowly progressive and destructive infection of the brain or spinal cord.
Neurosyphilis occurs in 15 to 20% of all late or tertiary syphilis infections (about 10 to 20 years after the primary infection), and is a progressive, life-threatening complication.
Asymptomatic neurosyphilis precedes symptomatic syphilis and is present in 15% of those with latent (hidden) syphilis.

Late neurosyphilis (brain or spinal cord damage) is one of the most severe signs of this stage.
There are two laboratory methods for making the diagnosis: by identifying the bacteria in a sample taken from a lesion and placed on a microscope slide and by performing a blood test for syphilis.
If you have neurosyphilis, you may need to receive daily doses of penicillin intravenously (in the vein) and may need to be treated in the hospital.
