  John Diefenbaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in Neustadt, Ontario, Canada, he received a B.A. in 1915, an M.A. in Political Science and Economics in 1916, and an LL.B. in 1919 from the University of Saskatchewan.
Diefenbaker died on August 16, 1979 in Ottawa, Ontario, and is buried beside the Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker Centre at the University of Saskatchewan.
He had a special ceremony in place, so that the Maple Leaf flag was draped on his casket first, and then the Red Ensign that he defended so intensely in parliament was laid over it.

politician and Canada's 15th Prime Minister 1957-63, was born on this day in Neustadt Ontario in 1895 the son of William T. Diefenbaker and Mary Bannerman; died in Ottawa Aug 16, 1979.
At age 17 he left England for Northern Ontario, where he lived with the Ojibway, taking the name Grey Owl and claiming he was the son of an Apache woman and a Scotch fur trader.

Diefenbaker made what some believe to have been one of the most controversial policy decisions of the last century in Canada in 1959 when his government cancelled the development and manufacture of the Avro Arrow.
After cancelling the most technologically advanced aircraft in the world, the Canadian government purchased the American-made Bomarc missile system to defend Canada in the event of a Soviet nuclear bomber attack from the north.
Diefenbaker died on August 16, 1979 in Ottawa, Ontario, and is buried beside the Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker Centre at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Founded in 1855 by David Winkler, Neustadt (German for new town) is the birthplace of Canada's 13th Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker.
In 1855, David Winkler came to Canada from Germany and settled on the land above the south fork of the Saugeen River in the township of Normanby.
By 1865, the population of Neustadt had reached 300 and contained a flour mill, saw mill, flax mill, a brewery, a tannery, a boot and shoe making business, 3 stores, 3 hotels, 2 flsmith shops, and a woolen mill that was under construction.

 The Canadian Royal Heritage Trust Museum (Diefenbaker House)
This introductory room describes the founding of Neustadt in “The Queen’s Bush” by David Winkler and the royal heritage of Midwestern Ontario.  The story of the Diefenbaker family, their commitment to Canada’s royal heritage, and the house on Barbara Street, where John Diefenbaker, Prime Minister of Canada 1957-1963, was born in 1895 is also related.
There are special decorative touches to the brickwork around the windows and under the roof-line that add extra character to this charming late-Victorian residence.
The Village of Neustadt includes many sites and shops for the visitor, including the Neustadt Springs Brewery (one of Ontario’s oldest), the Neustadt Mill Antique and Farm Market, several restaurants, crafts and antique shops and a number of bed and breakfast establishments.

Neustadt Springs Brewery is a small craft industry, family owned and operated brewery in in Neustadt, Ontario.
It is reputed to be the oldest original operating brewery building in Ontario.
The brewery was constructed in 1859 by German immigrant Henry Huether with the help of some forty stone masons, it was built over some of the purest natural spring water in Canada.
