Lower Saxony is a region full of contrasting scenery, from the coastal mudflats to the Harz mountains.
The Lower Saxony National Park, which by itself covers an area of 278,000 hectares, offers protection to the Wattenmeer, the coastal area of mudflats between the Ems and Elbe rivers, as well as to the offshore East Frisian islands.
The Harz mountain scenery is a remarkable mix of deeply indented valleys, hills covered with large expanses of deciduous and coniferous forests, sheer cliffs, gently sloping hills, colourful mountain meadows and crystal-clear lakes.

 Dresden, Germany
Saxony's capital Dresden is located in what once was called valley of the clueless - as the city is encircled by mountains and hills, the signals of the West German TV stations never seemed to reach people's antennas, forcing them to watch the propaganda programmes the Socialist party had hatched up for them.
Nowadays, it is marked by hard contrasts: most of the famous buildings have been restored or rebuilt from scratch; the Neustadt, formerly a beggars' quarter, is flourishing to a surprising extent; various parks and recreational areas contribute to its beauty.
The union of Saxony and Poland lasted until 1763, but for a short interruption, and this period is nowadays called the Augustian Age.

Of these, the Altstadt is closely built and has only a few fine streets and squares, while the Neustadt possesses numerous broad streets and a handsome frontage to the Rhine.
In 1786 the elector of Trier, Clement Wenceslaus of Saxony, took up his residence in the town, and gave great assistance in its extension and improvement; a few years later it became, through the invitation of his minister, Ferdinand, Freiherr von Duminique, one of the principal rendezvous of the French émigrés.
This drew down upon the archbishop-elector the wrath of the French republicans; in 1794 Coblenz was taken by the French Revolutionary army under Marceau (who fell during the siege), and, after the signing of the Treaty of Lunéville (1801) it was made the chief town of the Rhine and Mosel department.
