The New York Times reported Sunday on a neutron star in our own galaxy that, last December, briefly released a burst of gamma radiation that exceeded the entire galaxy's normal output; BBC also has a report.
SGR 1806-20 has a history of previous gamma bursts (SGR stands for Soft Gamma Repeater), and was known as a magnetar, a neutron star with extremely intense magnetic fields, of which there may be only a few dozen in the entire galaxy.

He started by saying that this was the first he had heard of these stars, and therefore he had not thought about it a lot, but that he thought these must be supernova remnants rather than white dwarfs.
